The Florida Legislature is poised to approve a bill that would increase the governor’s salary by $110,000 starting in 2027.

It won’t benefit Gov. Ron DeSantis, who will leave office before it takes effect.

Florida’s governor currently earns $141,400. The new salary would be “at least 100%” of what a state Supreme Court justice is paid, which now is $251,414.

The legislation cleared the House on Feb. 8 by a vote of 79-35 with Democrats opposed. It’s close to passage in the Senate.

In pushing the legislation, Republican leaders have noted that Florida’s governor earns less than other states with fewer people. DeSantis earns less than many state employees, including the education commissioner.

The bill also would raise the salaries for Florida’s lieutenant governor, attorney general, chief financial officer and agriculture commissioner.
