You’ll have two chances to see the Delaware governor’s mansion, Woodburn, decked out for the holidays, and Gov. John Carney and First Spouse Tracey Quillen Carney are scheduled to attend the free events.

On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Woodburn will be open as part of the “First Saturdays in the First State” program in partnership with First State Heritage Park. The mansion, nearby Hall House and the gardens will be decorated for the holiday season.

On Friday, Dec. 13 from 6-9 p.m., “Woodburn Illuminated” will feature a tree lighting ceremony, candle illuminations, and tours of the mansion accompanied by music from student choirs and jazz ensembles.

The program is being held in conjunction with the Biggs Museum of American Art and First State Heritage Park.

Where is Woodburn and why is it significant?

At 151 Kings Highway in Dover, Woodburn has served as the official residence of Delaware’s governor since 1965.

Built about 1798 by Charles Hillyard III, it is described as “one of the finest Middle Period Georgian houses in Delaware,” according to the state’s website.

Past residents have included farmers, an abolitionist, two U.S. Senators, two doctors, a dentist, a judge and several governors, although some governors haven’t used the mansion as their full-time residence.
