President Biden will host foreign leaders in Wilmington. One stop is heading back to school

President Joe Biden is set to host foreign leaders in Wilmington for the first time in his presidency. And he’s taking them to school.

The president is hosting the Quad Leaders’ Summit on Saturday, bringing leaders from Australia, India and Japan to Delaware. Not all details on the visit were released, given heightened security concerns, but one stop will be familiar to Biden: Archmere Academy.

The Catholic college preparatory school in Claymont will host these leaders as they meet in person for just the fourth time. Biden hopes this visit to the First State – alongside the “Leaders Dinner” at his former high school – shows the Quad is here to stay, even after his final year in office, according to a senior administration official. From meetings to dinner, the summit aims to focus on a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

“President Biden asked that the historic Patio on the campus of his high school alma mater, Archmere Academy, be the site of the Quad Leaders’ Summit, with leaders from Australia, India, and Japan,” a school spokesperson said in a statement to Delaware Online/The News Journal. “We welcome the President, our esteemed alumnus, and honorable dignitaries.”

Biden attended Archmere after his family moved to Delaware. He has said the priests at the private school – a converted mansion from a General Motors and DuPont executive – heavily influenced him as he grew up. There, he played football and learned to overcome his stutter, according to the White House. Later, he sent his children to the school and kept it in his life over the years.

There will be no student involvement with the event, according to the school.

Back to the foreign policy of it all: Quad foreign ministers have met eight times since 2019, including most recently in Tokyo in July. The next Quad Summit is scheduled to be hosted by India, as the group is meant to promote cooperation in the region and tackle issues like health, security and climate change.

The meeting likely hopes to show the Biden-Harris Administration’s continued commitment to the four-country partnership, while also showing members around the president’s Delaware roots.
