A significant winter storm will charge up the East Coast on Sunday, but most of Delaware will avoid its snowiest impacts.
According to the National Weather Service, northern Delaware, especially north of I-95, could have a few inches of snow on Sunday. South of the interstate, snow accumulations will drop off sharply. Kent and Sussex counties will have more of a rain event and less than an inch of snow. A winter weather advisory has been issued for New Castle County from 7 a.m. on Sunday to 1 a.m. on Monday, with 2-4 inches of snow expected.
The closer you are to the Pennsylvania border, the more snow you could receive.
Precipitation chances start Sunday morning, with a mix of rain and snow initially expected. As the day continues, snow will take over for northern Delaware. Chances of precipitation across Delaware linger into late Sunday night.
Snow and rain could mix together in New Castle County as the line between rain and snow dances along the Delaware River. There is some uncertainty about where that line will track.
National Weather Service meteorologist Amanda Lee said dangerous cold will set in following the storm, with low temperatures early next week in the single digits with subzero wind chills. The last time this kind of cold was measured in Georgetown was last week, but before that, it was in January 2022.
“The primary concern is definitely going to be the dangerous cold beginning Sunday night; the coldest night looks like it’s going to be Monday night, where lows are going to be in the single digits, pretty much through the whole state,” Lee said.
