DELAWARE – Delaware Moms Demand Action is renewing its push for gun control in Delaware, hoping the 2024 session will see the passage of Delaware’s Permit to Purchase legislation.

The bill would create a separate regulatory class for handguns in the first state, requiring additional licensing, permitting including fingerprinting, a background check, and an additional course on how to handle and store firearms.

Chapter Lead Kristen Bruce tells 47ABC that the restrictions would apply to peer-to-peer purchases, gun shows, and traditional retailers.

“To get the permit, you would have to undergo a background check, including fingerprints, training with the firearm, and also the education on how to secure your fire,” Bruce said.

Moms Demand Action says they plan to hold multiple events in Dover this year to keep the pressure on lawmakers.

However, a similar law in Maryland is currently under a Supreme Court appeal over its constitutionality, which could put a damper on lawmakers’ desire to pass a similar measure.
