Good Samaritans helped police and firefighters save a man from drowning near a pier on the Delaware River over the weekend, authorities said.

The man was rescued from Freedom Pier in Gloucester City in Camden County, local police said Monday.

Police responded to the pier off South King Street around 12:10 a.m. Saturday. Several people were on the pier’s south side attempting to rescue the man and keeping his head above water until first responders arrived.

Three police officers secured a life vest around the man, authorities said. Firefighters arrived and helped lead the man to a nearby marina, where he was removed from the river and brought to a hospital.
