Lewes Crossing holds third annual Safety Day

At its annual Safety Day June 10, Lewes Crossing celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Delaware State Police. On a perfect June day, residents watched a state police helicopter approach the field behind the community’s clubhouse and gently land. Also arriving were a K-9 unit, a trooper from the Motorcycle Unit and a trooper from the Community Engagement Unit.

More than 100 residents and guests turned out for what was an opportunity to learn about some of the important work performed by the Delaware State Police to keep communities safe, respond to emergencies and help maintain the quality of life most enjoy.

Helicopter pilot Craig Lewis provided an overview of helicopter operations, capabilities and the numerous types of missions he flies, including providing support for presidential visits. Trooper Robin Brown, representing the Motorcycle Unit and also the Community Engagement Unit, spoke to residents about her Harley-Davidson Police Electra Glide. Trooper Lewis Briggs from the Community Engagement Unit answered questions about the state police and also shared opportunities for a career with DSP. And, of course, there was Viper, a Belgian Malinois with the K-9 Unit, who with her handler Trooper Tyler Botchie, demonstrated her acute explosive-detecting and -sniffing skills.

To close out the day, the Lewes Crossing Property Owners Association presented a donation to the Delaware State Troopers Association to assist with the charities it supports and the welfare of troopers.

The Lewes Crossing Social Committee provided refreshments and giveaways, while the Safety Committee coordinated with the state police on unit availability.
