Delmarva Power hosts a career expo for local students – 47abc
SALISBURY, Md. – As part of Energy Week, Delmarva Power showcased career opportunities to local students in our area.
Over 110 students from Sussex and Wicomico counties gathered together for hands-on training and discussion. Senior Line instructor for Delmarva Power Dean Johnson, said options with the company are endless.
“You are exposed to a lot, it’s good for a young kid to see a truck going down a road and recognize it. Hey, that person looks like me, or someone they know from the community doing the work, and say I remember this, and I could be out there and do that.”
Students from Poly Tech, Salisbury Christian, and several other schools to learn about the career opportunities in the company. Christian School Guidance Counselor, Kasi Lyndaker said, this will be beneficial to students who don’t want to take the college route.
“In the last few years, I have seen a big push where students are asking more about trades, and what that looks like. Due to the cost of college, or because they feel college is not the right fit, or in their family dynamic, maybe they can’t leave home. There is a multitude of different reasons why.” Said Lyndaker.
Several stations were at the expo showcasing a variety of different roles within the company. Electricians, substations, and linemen work was all demonstrated to students.
Senior Supervisor Training Specialist, Andy Boulden, said working in the substation department, no day is the same when dealing with substation work. “Substations are very diversified, you could be wiring up something one day, setting up a transfer with a crane another, or setting up breakers; that’s what attracted me to it, it’s not monotonous, doing the same thing every day.”
Boulden encourages students to get involved because jobs like these, can give students purpose. “If I could come from being a plumber, all the way up to working high voltage through the training program here at Delmarva Power, to being a trainer here today, the possibilities for anyone to get to where they want to go in this company are endless.” Said, Boulden.
