Multiple graded stakes winner Catalina Cruiser was represented by his first winner June 10 at Delaware Park when Philip DiCosmo’s Catalina Cruzin captured her debut.
Trained by Anthony Pecoraro, Catalina Cruzin chased splits of :22.92 and :48.05 early and took command in deep stretch to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Kevin Gomez. The 2-year-old, running for a tag of $50,000 in the $45,000-$50,000 claiming contest, clocked the five furlongs in a final time of 1:01.19 over the fast main track.
Catalina Cruzin was acquired for $32,000 by Pecoraro at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale from the All Dreams Equine consignment. She had previously gone through the ring twice, selling to Cupp Thoroughbreds for $4,000 as a yearling at the 2022 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale and for $25,000 to ABC Thoroughbreds later that year at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale.
Bred in Kentucky by Springland Farm and High Top Bloodstock, the bay filly is the first foal out of the Quality Road mare Surrender Dorothy.
First crop sire Catalina Cruiser, a flashy son of Union Rags campaigned by Hronis Racing and trained by John Sadler, won five graded stakes races on the track. He retired to stud in 2020 sporting a record of 7-0-0 from 9 career starts and earnings of $711,100. Catalina Cruiser stands for a fee of $15,000 live foal at Lane’s End Farm in Lexington.
