Dallas man gets life in prison without parole for killing cop

DALLAS – A person was sentenced routinely to life in jail with out parole after a jury convicted him of capital homicide Wednesday within the 2021 capturing dying of a Dallas-area police officer.

A Dallas County jury deliberated slightly over an hour earlier than discovering Jaime Jaramillo, 38, responsible within the capturing dying final Dec. 3 of Officer Richard Houston outdoors a Mesquite grocery store.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that Houston, 46, was answering a home disturbance report when he arrived on the grocery store parking zone to search out Jaramillo, his spouse, their daughter and one other girl concerned in an altercation.

The affidavit says that the daughter advised police that she and her mom believed Jaramillo was dishonest on his spouse with one other girl. The affidavit says that when Houston went to speak to Jaramillo, the person pulled out a gun and shot Houston earlier than capturing himself.

Jaramillo recovered from his wound to face trial within the capturing, for which prosecutors weren’t in search of the dying penalty. Protection attorneys tried to indicate that Jaramillo didn’t understand that Houston was a police officer, which might render the homicide a non-capital crime and eligible for parole. Police video confirmed that Houston was in uniform and arrived in a marked patrol automobile.
