Buttigieg downplays DC crime rate despite having security detail: 'I can safely walk my dog to the Capitol'

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently downplayed Washington, D.C.’s, crime problems, saying there’s a lot of “energy” going into making the nation’s capital seem far worse than it is.

“We need to talk about the reality here,” Buttigieg said during a Sunday MSNBC appearance. “There’s a lot of funding and a lot of energy going into telling a different story in news outlets and online.”

“But the simple facts and the simple reality are right here staring us in the face, including the fact I can safely walk my dog to the Capitol today in a way you couldn’t do when we all got here,” he said.

A Department of Transportation spokesperson told Fox News Digital following publication that Buttigieg was referring to the “deadly January 6th domestic terrorist attack in 2021 that led to hundreds of National Guard troops being stationed for months at the U.S. Capitol, with a perimeter fence that was up through July of 2021.”

Buttigieg is provided with security details due to this position with the government.

When he made the comments on Sunday, there was a quadruple shooting around six miles southwest of the Capitol building, Fox 5 reported. And just days before, a woman was caught in crossfire in southeast D.C. and narrowly escaped being injured by ducking before a stray bullet shattered her car windshield.

Earlier this year, a man was charged in the November 2023 break-in of a Secret Service vehicle parked outside the D.C. home of President Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi.

Meanwhile, the nation’s capital has experienced soaring crime rates as its leaders have attempted to alleviate anxiety.

Democrat D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson told the House Oversight Committee last year that while there are significant concerns regarding crime, residents should not worry.

According to data from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, crime rates in the city exponentially increased last year from 2022.

Homicides, for example, increased by nearly 35%, while robberies were up 67%. Violent crime as a whole shot up by almost 40% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

The data also shows that violent crime rates have decreased as of April 8 since the same time last year.

FC Dallas vs Colorado Rapids: Lineup notes 📝

FC Dallas wraps up the first portion of the regular season tonight when they take on the Colorado Rapids.

Lineups are in from both sides. Let’s dive into what Eric Quill’s starting group looks like, who is on the bench, and who we believe will see minutes later on in this one.

What Changed From Last Match

With no Petar Musa (and Deedson), who is away preparing for next month’s World Cup, we get to see Logan Farrington return to the lineup. He’ll have Santiago Moreno and Joaquin Valiente with him in the attack.

Ran Binyamin also returns to the lineup after being on the bench last weekend in San Jose.

The defense sees the biggest shift, with Osaze Urhoghide out with an injury this weekend (more of a precaution than anything else I’m told). The defense will be lead by veterans Shaq Moore, Sebastien Ibeagha and Herman Johansson.

FC Dallas Lineup Notes:

Who should come off the bench?

Given the way Quill has rotated players in and out lately, it is fair to say we’ll see Cappis and Sarver off the bench. Outside of those two, we could get either Louis or Simmonds if there is another attacking need late in the match. But if he needs to go defense, don’t sleep on either Nolan Norris or Lalas Abubakar get some minutes here.

Key Question Heading Into Kickoff

Can FC Dallas wrap up this portion of the schedule on a positive note?

Dallas has been very good in their last two road games, winning in places that they hadn’t won at in over a decade or two. Colorado is no different, as they’ve struggled to pick up results here over the years. With nearly two months off coming up after this one, getting this portion of the season under their belts with a positive result is a must. Dallas needs to come out with energy early, and work those transition moments late in the match when the Rapids have tired legs to finish this one out.

Rain fails to stop crowds as 49th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival kicks off

Rain did not stop crowds from filling Piedmont Park as the 49th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival kicked off for Memorial Day weekend.

The three-day festival, which runs through Monday, marks the first major gathering at the park since 404 Day. Despite a brief weather delay during the afternoon, attendees remained determined to keep the music going.

What we know:

The Atlanta Police Department put extensive safety measures into effect ahead of the weekend crowds. Officials stated that security forces are being deployed heavily throughout the surrounding areas to monitor the festivities.

“To have units in park, on beltline you will see officers all over the city there isn’t one area that wont be covered,” an Atlanta Police Department representative said.

Event organizers emphasized that maintaining the event’s open-access model requires continuous effort behind the scenes. George Matlock, chair of the Atlanta Jazz Festival, Inc. board of directors, explained that the organization fundraises year-round to ensure the festival remains entirely free and inclusive to the public.

Matlock added that the event is deeply tied to both cultural heritage and local community building, encouraging residents to visit the park over the holiday weekend.

What they’re saying:

Festival attendees refused to let the rainy conditions spoil the experience, finding creative ways to stay comfortable while listening to the performances.

“I come every year for the last 4 years, so I didn’t want to let the rain stop me,” attendee Keana Washington said.

“We got this tent and everyone loves this blue tent. I said yeah let’s put this tent up . We will hang out, vibe and listen to the music and have a good time,” attendee Curtina Gray said.

Organizers also highlighted the broader historical significance of keeping the genre alive in the city.

“This city needed a cultural piece like the festival was very important and we want to keep this legacy alive,” Matlock said, later adding, “Jazz is roots of who we are as American, so we have to keep this form of music alive.”

Local music fans expressed gratitude for the city’s preservation of the free tradition.

“Keep bringing it back I know this is one of the only free jazz festivals in the us so yeah we need it and we are grateful to be in Atlanta,” Washington said.
