“Since day one, Chief Acevedo has carried out this role with the vision, purpose, and conviction of a permanent chief,” said Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor.

In the same statement, Acevedo acknowledged the decision was not easy, “I am grateful for the unwavering dedication of the exceptional men and women of the Aurora Police Department. Serving as Chief of Police alongside the current leadership team has been an honor,” said Acevedo.

Acevedo was Chief of HPD from 2016 to 2021 before downsizing for the role of Chief for Miami PD. In Miami, Acevedo was forced out after only six months as the city council fired him following a lengthy public review.

Acevedo then came back to Texas for a short stint before taking the interim role in Aurora. Former HPD Assistant Chief Heather Morris, a staunch supporter of Acevedo, has been named interim chief.

Acevedo had a close friendship with Mayor John Whitmire in the past, but a senior city hall official tells KPRC 2 Investigates there are no plans at this time to have Acevedo join the administration in any capacity.
