Austin taco expert’s podcast tracks down the deep roots of Texas’ favorite food
Oscar-Mike-Golf (OMG)! Only six months after the first Foxtrot Market opened in Austin, the fourth and final location is up and running at The Drag by the University of Texas at Austin.
That’s the final addition for now, anyway. These stores have drawn quite a crowd, and it wouldn’t be surprising if more were announced once these have time to settle in.
A press release states: “As a UT alumnus, Bloom hopes that the new location on The Drag will help foster inspiration for the next generation of entrepreneurs, serving as a place where students can go to find their next favorite study snack, gather with friends or enjoy a meal before class.”
The first opening was big news for Austin. Foxtrot is a cult favorite in Chicago — that’s exciting on its own — but co-founders Mike LaVitola and Taylor Bloom met in Austin. People around town were excited to welcome them back, and even folks who had never heard of the store have since been charmed by its selection and ambiance.
Part gourmet convenience store, part wine bar and coffee shop, these stores have hit an elusive balance between practical and fanciful. Shoppers can stop in and grab charcuterie trays, frozen treats, and high-end pantry items like ramen from famous New York restaurant Momofuku; or they can order a warm cookie or local bread at the bar.
Some of Foxtrot’s in-house products are great little prizes that don’t make most shoppers lists, but are fun to buy on a whim: flavored popcorns, colorful bags of assorted candies, and their take on Rice Krispies Treats.
It’s a hot spot for drinks, including rows of refrigerated probiotics, natural sodas, and a fairly large selection non-alcoholic spirits. Of course, wine, beer, and coffee are always flowing, and shaded seats for enjoying the snack haul right away. Wifi also makes this a great stop for remote workers.
The new location at The Drag brings the total number of Foxtrot stores across the United States to 29 across four cities: Chicago, Washington, D.C., Dallas, and Austin. Different locations have significantly different layouts and have been received differently by their respective communities, resulting in an interesting spread of Google reviews.
It’s worth checking out each Austin location individually, especially as business normalizes in a new city.
The new Foxtrot at The Drag is located at 2270 Guadalupe St. Hours of operation are 6:30 am to 10 pm, Sunday through Thursday; and 6:30 am to 10:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. More information and online ordering links are available at foxtrotco.com.
