A suspect who attempted to enter a bar in the Downtown Austin entertainment district illegally with a gun was shot and killed and three innocent bystanders were injured during an officer-involved shooting late Saturday evening.

Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson with the Austin Police Department said during a media briefing early Sunday morning that officers wearing police uniforms responded at 11:52 p.m. to a report of a person attempting to enter a bar with a gun at the 200 block of East 6th Street, which is a violation of Texas Penal Code section 46.02 Unlawful Carrying of Weapons.

According to a satellite map of the address, the incident happened near the bars Eureka!, The Dead Rabbit, Friends Bar, Voodoo Doughnut, BBG’s, Eden Cocktail Room, and Recess Arcade Bar.

When officers arrived, an employee of the bar identified the suspect with the gun and approached them. That’s when the suspect pulled out his gun and pointed it at the officers and innocent bystanders, according to Interim Police Chief Henderson.

No officers were injured, however, three people inside the bar were hit by the bullets during the incident and were transported to the hospital by EMS. One is in critical condition and the other two with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officers who discharged their guns have nine, 11, and 13 years of service with APD. They have been placed on administrative duty as per APD protocol. The body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released to the public within 10 business days.

APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into the officer-involved shooting: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
