Westside Patriots claim 3rd state basketball title in a row
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Westside Patriots have won their third straight state title after beating Toombs County 64-29.
Westside dominated from the opening tip and led by 17 points at the half and as much as 30 in the third quarter.
The Patriots rolled through the GHSA AA State Tournament. They opened the playoffs with a 73-point win over Cook in the opening round before wins by 30, 30, 38 and 11 points.
This is Head Coach Jerry Hunter’s fourth championship as coach.
The Class 2A Boys State Championship game was set for 3 p.m.
The idea of a three-peat is seldom seen or even talked about in sports, because finding a way to win three consecutive championships is beyond difficult to do.
Earlier in the week we had a chance to talk to Hunter. He said, “At the beginning of the season, I told the guys, I would rather fail trying to do something impossible, than be successful at doing nothing, so let’s get to work. They bought into the understanding. It seemed a little unattainable at first, but then it started getting closer and closer, and they started to understand that we have a chance to do something real special here, not only for Westside but for the City of Augusta.”
