New details on baby kidnapping, car theft case in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – We are learning more about the baby was who safely located after being kidnapped in a stolen car from the family’s driveway in Augusta this week.
The sheriff’s office says deputies responded to the 2100 Block of A Street at 9:07 p.m. on Wednesday about a motor vehicle theft with a 2-week-old baby inside.
The victim was unloading her vehicle when an unknown subject got into it and drove off with the baby in the backseat, officials say.
She told deputies they had just returned to their apartment from shopping. While unloading groceries, she walked her oldest child inside, deputies say.
The mother stated the vehicle was still running, but when she walked back out, her car was gone in an unknown direction, according to authorities.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies began searching for the vehicle and child and located both approximately 15 minutes later near Lake Olmstead in a parking lot.
The suspect abandoned the vehicle and the child was found safe and reunited with the mother, officials say.
The only known stolen items were both the key fobs in the car, authorities say.
