LELAND — Mary Lelia Tarver Fulcher, 99, of Leland, passed away at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick County on September 6, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Julia Stone Tarver and the late Ruffin Nolan Tarver.

Mary was born in Burke County, Georgia, and then moved to Augusta, GA as a young woman. She worked at the Augusta Arsenal, for Southern Bell Telephone Company, and with special needs children. She moved back to Burke County, working as a homemaker and at the Burke County Training School. In 1990, she moved to North Carolina to be near her family. In her later years, she was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Brunswick County.

Mary was preceded in death by an infant child, Paris Louis Brentnell, her sister Pauline Tarver Stapleton, and her nephew Bill Stapleton. She is survived by her children, John Edwin Fulcher, II of Leland, and Elizabeth Burke of Laurinburg, NC; grandchildren, Carrie Elizabeth Burke (Luis) of Greensboro, Claire Burke Baker (James) of Laurinburg, Shaun Burke (Amy) of Greensboro; great-grandchildren Tony James Baker of Laurinburg. and Isabella Martinez of Greensboro; niece Julie Johnson (Traylor) of Martinez, GA, and nephew Buddy Glover (Kay) and family of Augusta, Ga.

Her much beloved cat, Spooky, that she shared with her son, passed away at age 20 on October 1, 2022. He is deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, at Caledonia United Methodist Church,15201 Barnes Bridge Rd, Laurinburg, NC 28352, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services. Light refreshments will follow the service.
