Here’s an explanation for loud booms heard across CSRA

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Supersonic jets may have been to blame for the booming noises heard by CSRA residents on Friday.

Throughout the day, people reported hearing booms that rattled their windows every 30 minutes to an hour.

We reached out to Fort Eisenhower and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, but couldn’t get any confirmation of a cause.

However, our Upstate South Carolina sister station WHNS reported ground-shaking noises in Greenwood County, too.

WHNS reported the booms were caused by Lockheed Martin’s predelivery testing of F-17s, which can make supersonic flights, causing sonic booms.

While Greenwood County isn’t in the CSRA, it adjoins Edgefield and McCormick counties.

That’s not all that far when it comes to supersonic speeds and loud booms.
