Early voting underway in Augusta, as voters are advised to do their homework

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Augusta early voters are finding out that doing your homework goes along way.

“Well, my wife printed out the ballot for me, so I knew who I was going to vote for,” said Berley Green.

Whether Augusta voters select a Democrat primary ballot, Republican, or non-partisan, there are a lot of choices to make.

There is the mayor’s race, five commission races and two sales tax questions.

“This is probably the longest ballot we’re had in Richmond County in the 30 years that I’ve been here. I’ve never seen a ballot quite this long with so many candidates,” said Travis Doss, Elections Director

Doss recommends voters get a sample ballot and study it before heading to the polls. It paid off for some early voters.

“It was a huge ballot, but if you prepare ahead of time and kind of print your ballot out and go over it kind of vet the candidates beforehand, it kind of goes smooth,” said Nicole Floyd

Augusta voters are familiar with the SPLOST question on the ballot, but they may need to go read up on the half-penny FLOST tax for property tax relief.

“No, we’ve never had that before. That was due to a law change a couple of years ago that allowed counties to opt in or opt out as far as giving tax relief,” said Doss.

So, voters have a decision about Augusta having another sales tax.

“Do your homework on that, because it’s going to affect your pocketbook,” said Floyd.

“Enough taxes, enough taxes,” said Green.

“You’re not a supporter?”

No,” said Green.

Early voting continues until May 15th, so there is time to get up to speed on this sizable ballot.

After big early voting turnout, Augusta prepares for primary election day

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It was a busy day, installing voting machines at 41 polling sites. However, thousands of voters will not need them, as many have already cast ballots.

“On the day of the election, I don’t want to take a chance of the machine go down, overcrowding, you’ve got to wait in line a long time,” said Ed Bowen.

But others prefer their home polling sites on Election Day.

“There’s no reason to rush. Voting is very important and we have to get out and vote,” said Sam Fisher.

More than 18,000 voters already have.

Elections Director Travis Doss says that’s 14 percent of registered voters, and he expects to see another 14 percent on Tuesday.

“Usually, we see about 50 percent of the people will have voted early, so with 14 percent, then we should hopefully get into the 30 percent range when it’s all said and done,” said Doss.

Doss advises voters to go to their Georgia My Voter page to verify their precinct, and get a sample ballot.

Here’s one of sign of the times: At St. Marks Church, its telling voters of a precinct switch. Mann Mize Church and Oasis Church are also out this election.

And the ballot is long, and this long line of campaign signs at Diamond Lakes is an
indication.

“That’s a lot of signs,” said Fisher

“Too many?”

“That’s a lot of signs out,” he said.

For Augusta, there is a mayor’s race, five contested commission races and two sales tax questions – all reasons to turn out.

“That is the person that you’re electing for the next four years to represent you, so for mayor and five commissioners, this is make or break time for them,” said Doss.

The voting machines will be there Tuesday waiting on the voters.

Buddy Carter to campaign in Augusta during statewide tour

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Buddy Carter is scheduled to make a campaign stop in Augusta as part of his statewide “Fly Around” tour ahead of Georgia’s Republican primary on Tuesday.

Supporters are invited to attend the Augusta event at 1501 FBO Way. Organizers ask attendees to arrive no later than 11:40 a.m.

Carter’s tour includes additional stops in Savannah, Macon, Albany, Columbus and Atlanta as he works to rally voters before primary day.

Format

The NCAA organizes six regional tournaments, and each field consists of 12 teams and six individuals. After three rounds of stroke play at a regional tournament, the top five teams from each location advance to the national championship. The top individual on a non-advancing team from each regional site advances as well.

The Course

The UGA Golf Course has received numerous accolades during its 55+ years of existence. It is a fixture in Golfweek Magazine’s collegiate golf course rankings, coming in at #26 in 2022. In the state of Georgia, the UGA Golf Course is ranked as the 12th best public golf course to play by Golfweek Magazine. GolfAdvisor, which is more focused on customer reviews, ranked the UGA Golf Course as the #1 course in Georgia, the #1 collegiate course in the U.S., and the 10th best course in the nation to play according to data collected in 2021.

In May 2006, Love Golf Design of St. Simons Island was hired to renovate the green complexes and add 21 new tees to both lengthen and shorten the golf course to improve playability for all golfer abilities. The new championship Bulldog Tees stretched the course to almost 7,300 yards and provided the best collegiate and professional golfers with a very stern test. The golf course reopened in December 2006 to rave reviews.

How Vandy Got Here

Vandy put together another nationally relevant season in 2026, spending much of the spring ranked inside the top 15 and consistently competing against elite SEC and national fields. Under head coach Scott Limbaugh, the Commodores combined veteran leadership with one of the country’s strongest young cores.

The season was highlighted by several strong tournament finishes, including a runner-up performance at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, where Vanderbilt finished behind Auburn after shooting under par in all three rounds. Freshman Jon Ed Steed emerged as one of the team’s breakout stars with multiple top-five individual finishes during the spring.

Senior standout Wells Williams anchored the roster throughout the year and earned first-team All-SEC honors, while Steed was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Williams also repeated as SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Commodore golfer to win the award in consecutive seasons.

At the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Vanderbilt entered as a top-10/top-15 caliber team nationally, but the tournament ended disappointingly. The Commodores were in contention entering the final stretch before a difficult closing round dropped them to 15th place overall at 3-over par, ending their SEC title hopes early.
