AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – It’s Valentine’s Day, and in the world of sports that means it’s almost time for March Madness.

With the Peach Belt Conference tournament just a few weeks away, we caught up with Augusta University’s men’s basketball coach to discuss the Jags’ recent success.

This season hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for the Jags,

but when push comes to shove, they’re starting to play some great ball when it matters the most.

By defeating USC Aiken in a double-overtime-thriller on Saturday, the Jags brought their conference record back to .500 and extended their winning streak to four games.

Augusta University is now tied with Georgia Southwestern and Flagler College for the number four seed in the Peach Belt Conference standings.

As we enter the home stretch of the regular season, Head Coach Dip Metress is happy to see his Jags kicking it into high gear.

“You’ve got to play better as the year progresses, and we are playing better. Our freshman is growing up, our older guys are more comfortable in their roles, and to be honest with you, we had four of the first six on the road in our league, and for a young team, we didn’t play well for a couple of nights. So, now we close it out with four of our six at home. Unfortunately, two of them are on the road at Lander and North Georgia, who are first and second in the league. So, it’s all about growth and being ready when the conference tournament starts,” said Metress.

The Jags will be looking for their fifth win in a row on Wednesday on their home floor against Flagler College.
