55-year-old man ID’d in suspicious death near Augusta Canal

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A 55-year-old man has been identified as the victim in a suspicious death on the 1400 block of Greene Street.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office says Brad Burkham was recovered from the Augusta Canal on Saturday.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says Burkham was found dead in the waters of a tributary of the Augusta Canal under the bridge.

The coroner’s office says autopsy results are pending at this time.

On Saturday, when a News 12 crew got on scene around 4:45 p.m., they saw one sheriff’s office vehicle on scene.

Crews fight brush fires 2 days in a row in Aiken County

Crews battled two brush fires in Aiken County. On Friday, a call came in at 6:11 a.m. for a fire at Jefferson Davis Highway and Ackerman Drive. A day before, there was a fire at a landfill.

The death comes amid an outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed more than 180 lives in a little over two years across the CSRA.

The crime outbreak has affected communities large and small, but as the biggest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.

Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs.
