2 die in separate crashes in Richmond, Columbia counties

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Two people have died after separate fatal crashes in Richmond and Columbia counties early Thursday.

In Richmond County

Authorities say they got a report of an accident at 5:29 a.m. on the 1200 block of Twiggs Street at Laney Walker Boulevard.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed he is investigating the fatal crash.

Officials say the vehicle was traveling west at a high speed and left the road, striking a tree.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:17 a.m. A passenger was taken to Wellstar MCG Hospital by emergency medical crews.

Bowen says the identification will be released once next of kin has been notified.

Twiggs Street between Laney Walker Boulevard and Wrightsboro Road were blocked.

In Columbia County

Also Thursday morning, Columbia County officials were on the scene of another fatal accident involving a bicyclist on Bison Way in Grovetown.

Officials say the call came in at 6:37 a.m., but details are limited.

Officials did say no traffic lanes were blocked.
