Water woes continue in Atlanta for third day

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Water streamed through several streets in Atlanta for the third consecutive day.

After a weekend out of town, Andrew Hagan and Zenia Nava discovered that the water wasn’t working at their apartment in Midtown.

“We’d tried to flush the toilet and it wouldn’t go,” Hagan said. “The sinks are just dripping until they’re empty and we assume the shower won’t work.”

While walking around their neighborhood, the couple was forced to tiptoe through a pond of rushing water.

This came from a major water main break at the intersection of 11th Street and West Peachtree Street NW, near the Eleventh Street Pub.

“It’s a little off-putting, I wasn’t expecting it when we got in today. It’s not fun to walk over.”

Outside State Farm Arena, Megan Reid was back from Birmingham after Friday’s Megan Thee Stallion’s concert was canceled.

“I was really frustrated because I took off work and rented a car,” she said.

Reid had driven over two hours in rush hour traffic on Friday afternoon, only to find out that the concert was rescheduled to Sunday because of widespread water issues in Atlanta.

Reid was especially upset that State Farm Arena made the announcement only two hours before the show was set to start.

“I just kind of feel like they waited as long as they possibly could,” she said. “People who traveled from other places weren’t really taken into consideration.”

While the water worked at State Farm Arena and Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, the citywide boil water advisory remained in effect.

This meant limited food and drink options, as concessions stands weren’t able to sell soda from the fountain machines.

Both venues also added an abundance of hand sanitizing stations.

Dirk Davis attended the Atlanta United match.

“I knew they were going to have hand sanitizer, limited food and vending,” he said. “Probably don’t want to be drinking a lot of water or going to the bathroom.”

Reflecting back on this weekend, Davis says these widespread water issues weren’t a good look for Atlanta’s local leaders.

“To have such a big city shutdown like this because of a water main is real strange,” he concluded. “It leaves a little black eye on the city.”

According to the Atlanta Watershed Management Department, the boil-water advisory for residents located near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and James P. Brawley Drive could be lifted on Monday.

This would only be the case if Atlanta gets the greenlight from Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division.
