Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Metro Atlanta; Flights Affected

METRO ATLANTA, GA — A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for several metro Atlanta counties until 8 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service’s Peachtree City office.

The counties under the watch include Barrow, Bartow, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Paulding and multiple other counties.

The weather alert was issued in anticipation of severe thunderstorms arriving into metro AtlantaMonday afternoon into the night.

The weather service told Patch early Monday the line of thunderstorms should be coming from the north/northwest region and will be traveling to the southeast.

Nearly 300 flights leaving Atlanta were delayed Monday at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to the flight tracking platform, Flight Aware. The platform reported 96 flights departing the airport were cancelled.

As for entering Atlanta, 273 flights were delayed while 180 flights were cancelled.

DeKalb County Schools cancelled after-school activities due to the bad weather. Aftercare programs will go as normal. School officials said middle-school buses may be delayed, and other district buses will operate as weather permits.

Cherokee County Schools said teams may hold indoor practices and activities; otherwise, all outdoor after-school activities are canceled.

“This announcement does not affect regular school dismissal or the elementary school’s After School Program,” Cherokee school officials said in a news release.
