MARTA's downtown rapid transit line project temporarily delayed

ATLANTA – A construction accident has temporarily halted progress on MARTA’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) line, delaying the long-anticipated project designed to improve transit access in southwest Atlanta, according to Urbanize Atlanta.
What they’re saying:
According to MARTA officials, crews hit a shallow water line near an underground parking structure, forcing a pause in construction at the South Downtown station site, located at Mitchell Street and Forsyth Street. Work is continuing at other station sites and along the roadway, the agency said in a statement issued Monday afternoon.
The initial timeline projected the new Rapid A-Line would be ready for riders in 2025, but officials now say that date is no longer feasible. A revised launch date has not been announced, as MARTA continues to coordinate with its contractors, the city, and the Federal Transit Administration.
Dig deeper:
This isn’t the first surprise during construction. In December, MARTA revealed that workers unearthed long-buried trolley tracks along Hank Aaron Drive in Summerhill and discovered an abandoned underground garage in downtown Atlanta. The garage, located beneath street level and possibly linked to a nearby parking deck, was capped with a steel plate while MARTA attempted to reach the property owner.

James Pearce Jr. fueled by Falcons' belief in him
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons compiled a noteworthy trade package late during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to obtain edge defender James Pearce Jr., who was a player some predicted the Falcons might select at No. 15 overall. Instead, the Falcons used that pick to select Georgia edge rusher Jalon Walker.
The package to move up for the Los Angeles Rams’ No. 26 pick, which they used on Pearce, included the Falcons’ second-round pick (No. 46) and seventh-round pick (No. 242) in this year’s draft as well as a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Atlanta also got a third-round pick (No. 101) from the Rams, so it was ultimately a two-for-three deal in Los Angeles’ favor.
That level of investment could put pressure on an incoming rookie. But not this 21-year-old.
“Some people might use negative to fuel their fire,” Pearce said during his introductory press conference. “I feel like that was a super positive thing they did, and that fueled my fire. That put a lot of gasoline on there. Makes me want to go ahead and play for this organization a lot harder and a lot better.”
Pearce comes to Atlanta from the University of Tennessee, where he was a two-year starter for the Volunteers. He had a standout 2023 season with 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. He followed that up with 7.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss in 2024. His 107 pressures the last two seasons were most in the SEC.
Looking to improve their defense, the Falcons showed vested interest in Pearce throughout the draft process, as recently as Wednesday even. Head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot met with Pearce and his mother the day before action even began.
“We always talk about intangibles, and we want to bring in guys that love ball and love to compete as we build this roster the right way,” Fontenot said. “We spent a lot of time with him making sure that he was going to fit.”
Thursday’s move back into the first round proved the Falcons think he does — and Pearce felt that.
“They believed in me,” Pearce said. “They believed in my talent. They believed in my skill set. They believed in me growing as a man.”
On the first night of the NFL Draft, the Falcons added two proven SEC pass rushers in their rookie class. All parties are happy with the turnout so far.

Falcons Double Dip at Edge Rusher While NFC South Rivals Bolster Offenses

The Atlanta Falcons ended an eight-year drought of not selecting an edge rusher in the first round with their pick of Georgia’s Jalon Walker at No. 15 overall. Then, the Falcons went just 11 picks before selecting their next first-round edge rusher in Tennessee’s James Pearce.
Raheem Morris’ defense might need Walker and Pearce to contribute in a significant way immediately with what the rest of the NFC South did on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Carolina Panthers kicked off the night for the NFC South with the somewhat surprising selection of Arizona receiver Tetairoa McMillan. The Wildcats wideout was the first receiver off the board besides dual-threat, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
McMillan will join 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette in Carolina as the Panthers try to create a 1-2 punch at receiver to help quarterback Bryce Young.
“The Panthers get a big-bodied receiver with exceptional hand-eye coordination and athleticism who routinely wins 50-50 balls,” NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks wrote. “Dave Canales continues to redesign his wide receivers room and creates Carolina’s version of the Mike Evans-Chris Godwin tandem with McMillan joining Xavier Legette. Expect the jump-ball specialist to jell with Bryce Young from Day 1.”
Speaking of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they weren’t satisfied with going into next season with receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as their main outside targets. Tampa Bay added Ohio State wideout Emeka Egbuka at No. 19 overall.
Egbuka was the next wideout off the board after McMillan.
“A polished receiver who regularly separates from defenders, Egbuka is the perfect No. 3 receiver alongside Mike Evans and Chris Godwin,” Brooks wrote. “Baker Mayfield’s options in the passing game improved upon adding the Ohio State product’s natural pass-catching ability.”
The Falcons went a combined 3-1 versus the Panthers and Buccaneers in 2024. But Atlanta’s defense gave up an average of 248.5 passing yards per game and 11 touchdowns in those four contests.
Morris better hope his two new edge rushers develop quickly because unless the Falcons find a diamond in the rough later during the draft or in the undrafted free agency market, Atlanta’s secondary isn’t going to be any better in coverage versus those young receivers than it was last year.
When the Falcons play the New Orleans Saints, Walker and Pearce will be tested versus New Orleans’ first-round pick — Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.
Banks was the third offensive tackle off the board at No. 9 overall.
“The offensive line is everything for a creative play-designer like Kellen Moore,” Brooks wrote. “The Saints get a premier pass protector in Banks with the footwork, agility and athleticism to be an ideal dancing bear for Moore’s offense.”
Looking ahead at what Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft could look like in the NFC South, it will be a lot of waiting for the Falcons. Because of their trade back into the first round to grab Pearce, Atlanta no longer owns a second-round choice, and the Falcons won’t pick in the third round until the second-to-last selection.
Meanwhile, barring trades, the other three NFC South teams will make seven picks before Atlanta’s next on the clock. The Saints hold the most Day 2 picks in the division with three selections.

Traffic alert: Multiple crashes disrupting traffic in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA – Metro Atlanta drivers are facing a rough start to the morning commute with two major traffic disruptions reported near Spaghetti Junction.
Follow SKYFOX Traffic on X for latest information.
The first incident involved a semi-truck fire on the top-end of the perimeter. The blaze, which appears to have started around 12:30 a.m., shut down five right lanes near Buford Highway, prompting emergency response and extensive cleanup efforts. Drivers heading through the area are urged to take Interstate 85 inside the Perimeter as an alternate route to avoid delays.
Meanwhile, a separate incident on I-85 southbound in Doraville added to the chaos. A spinout crash near the interchange with I-285 caused a significant backup, with traffic jammed before Beaver Ruin Road. The crash was reported cleared around 7 a.m., but traffic remains jammed at this time.
Authorities are warning drivers to steer clear of the area and use Buford Highway as an alternate route until conditions improve.
