Deputy, suspect dead after shootout in Paulding County, sheriff’s office says

HIRAM, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A sheriff’s deputy is dead after being shot during a standoff that began as a domestic dispute, according to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said two deputies responded to a domestic dispute in a subdivision of Hiram around 6:15 p.m. and found a man inside a home. The man had shot a woman.

The man inside the home fired at deputies and hit deputy Brandon Cunningham.

Cunningham died of his injuries. According to the sheriff’s office, Cunningham is the first Paulding County deputy to die in the line of duty.

The woman is currently in the ICU. The suspect has not been identified by police.
