Arkansas legislative committee’s renewal of education contract with Solution Tree sparks debate
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT/KARK) – The Arkansas Legislative Council Review Subcommittee’s contract renewal with an educational contractor has sparked controversy recently.
According to our content partner KARK, the number one cause for debate stems from the company Solution Tree’s contract price of more than $100 million, while similar companies are offering between $18 and $29 million.
Legislators said during Tuesday’s meeting that the data does not appear to be backing the company up over the last seven years.
State Rep. Grant Hodges serves on the audit committee that recently looked at the contract, and he said the state has spent around $145 million of taxpayer money so far on the company whose purpose is to develop educational material for educators statewide.
“I’m not here to endorse a contract or not endorse it,” Education Secretary Jacob Oliva told the subcommittee. “We’ve followed a process. I feel like we can use this vehicle to implement LEARNS. That is what we are tasked to do.”
Hodges said he is not sure that students are benefiting much at all from the professional teacher development services the company’s supposed to be providing.

Alabama softball ace Jocelyn Briski is prepared for opportunity vs UCLA in WCWS
Alabama softball ace Jocelyn Briski is prepared for the Crimson Tide’s opportunity vs. UCLA at the Women’s College World Series.
It’s win or go home for half of the Women’s College World Series field on Friday, May 29.
In the nightcap of the WCWS elimination games is No. 8 UCLA vs. No. 5 Arkansas, two teams that suffered come-from-behind wins on May 28 by Alabama and Nebraska, respectively. The Bruins couldn’t take advantage of back-to-back home runs against Jocelyn Briski in the third, eventually falling 6-3 to the top-seeded Crimson Tide.

The Razorbacks’ loss was arguably more painful (or, at least, took longer). Arkansas twice led against Nebraska and USA Softball Player of the Year Jordy Frahm, but was unable to maintain either lead before Ava Kuszak walked the Razorbacks off in the bottom of the 10th inning in the 5-3 defeat.
Now the Bruins and Razorbacks both must gear up for a second game in as many days, with their WCWS hopes on the line. Here’s how to watch as UCLA takes on Arkansas in a pivotal win-or-go-home game:
