Commanders add another former Alabama running back
The Washington Commanders have signed running back Derrick Gore, the NFL team announced on Monday.
Since entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2019, Gore has played in 11 regular-season and two playoff games. They all came with the Kansas City Chiefs with Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator. Bieniemy is in his first season in that position with Washington.

Gore becomes the second former Alabama running back on the Commanders’ roster. Brian Robinson Jr. led Washington in rushing yards as a rookie last season.
Washington’s other running backs include holdovers Antonio Gibson and Jaret Patterson and rookie Chris Rodriguez Jr.

Gore did not play during the 2022 season, but he spent the final nine weeks of the campaign on the Saints’ practice squad. New Orleans had re-signed Gore on Jan. 9, but he had been a free agent since the Saints released him on May 2.
As a walk-on at Alabama, Gore gained 108 yards on 24 rushing attempts in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He scored once for the Crimson Tide, running 10 yards for a touchdown in Alabama’s 54-16 victory over Florida in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 3, 2016. Gore also blocked a punt in that game, and Josh Jacobs picked up the bouncing football and returned it for a Tide touchdown.
After transferring to Louisiana-Monroe, Gore ran for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns on 295 carries and caught 34 passes for 254 yards and one TD in two seasons before trying to catch on in the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2019.
In 2019 and 2020, the Los Angeles Chargers signed and released Gore four times, and he had a December 2019 stint on the Washington’s practice squad in the middle of those.
Gore started the 2021 season on the Kansas City practice squad, but he joined the Chiefs’ active roster on Oct. 12 and made his NFL regular-season debut on Oct. 17, 2021.
Gore ran for 256 yards and two touchdowns on 51 carries and caught eight passes for 105 yards in 11 regular-season games for Kansas City in 2021.
In 2022, the Chiefs released Gore from injured reserve on Aug. 25 with an injury settlement. Gore had sustained a thumb injury in the preseason. He was out of football until signing with the Saints on Nov. 9.
Washington will kick off its three-game preseason schedule on Aug. 11 against the Cleveland Browns.
