Black bears have always been in Alabama and always will be. It’s up to us to co-exist.

To hear many in Alabama tell it, the state is full of creatures of which there is no real proof that they exist here. Mountain lions. Black panthers. Big Foot. Hoop snakes. Even aliens.

Let’s not debate their existence here right now. We’ll save those arguments for a different day. Let’s talk about a relatively new creature to most of the state. Its presence here is not for debate: the black bear.

Let’s talk about facts here. Black bears – the state mammal – are native to Alabama. A small population has lived in southwest Alabama for decades.
