Auburn football vs. South Alabama: predictions, picks, odds

The Auburn Tigers are set to play its first day game of the young season this Saturday when it faces the South Alabama Jaguars for an 11:45 a.m. CT kickoff on SEC Network live from Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The Tigers promoted a more balanced attack in last week’s 42-3 win over Ball State by passing for 271 yards and rushing for an additional 224. Jeremiah Cobb had a breakout game by rushing for 121 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, which will forever go down as his first 100-yard, multi-touchdown performance. Through two games, he has gained 195 yards on 27 carries, which nearly exceeds his overall total from his first two season’s on the Plains.
This week, Cobb will be asked to carry a bulk of the load again as UConn transfer Durell Robinson has been ruled out due to what Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze called a “freak injury” following the Tigers win over Ball State. Robinson’s injury, along with the “game time decision” status of Damari Alston, could give Cobb another opportunity to prove that he deserves steady carries within the Tigers run game. He could also smash through the South Alabama defense that allows 211 rushing yards per game through the first two contests of the season.

Auburn vs. South Alabama predictions, picks for college football Week 3
Taylor Jones, Auburn Wire
“I expect South Alabama to provide Auburn with its toughest run challenge yet. The Jags average 191 yards per contest, with running back Kentrel Bullock carrying the load with 234 yards and three scores. However, Auburn’s run game could smother South’s defense that allows 211 yards per game. Expect Jeremiah Cobb and Jackson Arnold to slice up the Jags defense on Saturday, with Connor Gibbs showing off his boot with a field goal of 40+ yards.”

Brian Hauch, Auburn Wire
“Auburn comes into this contest against South Alabama with 90 points scored through two weeks. South Alabama has a high powered attack of their own, although the problem is the Jaguars have given up 54 points. USA quarterback Bishop Davenport is talented enough to give the Tigers a slight scare, but the home team’s supremacy on defense will prove to be the difference.”

Phillip Jordan, Auburn Wire
“Despite the Tigers having some injuries at running back Jeremiah Cobb should have a big day against the Jaguars rush defense that is allowing 211 rushing yards per game. That will open chances for big plays in the passing game for Jackson Arnold. Auburn should have the advantage on the line of scrimmage on both sides. A big key for the defense will be not allowing South Alabama wide receiver Devin Viosin to have a big game.”

“South Alabama covers (24.5) and the game goes over (55.5) South Alabama’s strength is on the offensive side of the ball with Davenport (QB), Bullock (RB) & Voisin (WR). They can move the ball & put up some points. Defensively, is another issue. They lost their top 5 DBs to the portal. So while talented, they are inexperienced. Auburn better not be looking ahead to Oklahoma or the Jaguars may just sneak up & bite them.“

Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System earns top marks in new report

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System has aced their report card, earning a five star-rating for the second year in a row from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“Last year we were one of three, this year we were one of only two hospitals in the state of Alabama to achieve a five star,” said CAVHCS C.E.O. Amir Farooqi. ” Really proud of our team, and if you have a chance to meet our in-patient care team there are folks who truly put their heart into our veterans. “
The report is based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care.
Farooqi says the report is a result of hard work and consistency, and they won’t become complacent.
“This is the work we do every day,” touted Farooqi. “This is constantly working to improve so there’s no magic wand to this, it’s just the hard work and making sure that we keep that concentration, keep that effort towards the care, making sure we’re listening to our veterans. “
Central Alabama joins a positive trend in nationwide veteran care.
“77 percent of VA hospitals across the nation earned either a four star or five-star,” Farooqi cited. “None of them earned a one-star. I think that really says something about the care the VA is putting forward to our veterans.”
These recent reports are extra encouraging, because just over a decade ago, an audit uncovered that patient scheduling and other information was deliberately altered at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Administration to disguise long wait times for care.
In fact, at the time, 57 percent of employees surveyed claimed they received instruction to manipulate wait times.
It seems those problems have mostly been resolved, since “timely and effective care” is a part of the evaluation.

Police seek state help to investigate chase that killed 17-year-old Alabama high schooler

A police department in north Alabama has reached out to the state for help as it continues its investigation into a police chase that led to a crash on Saturday, killing a high schooler.
In a statement Tuesday evening, Hartselle police said it seeks to work with “specialized equipment“ and homicide investigators with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to be able to present an airtight case to the district attorney.
Tristan Hollis, 17, who attended Hartselle High School, died after the suspect’s vehicle struck a minivan where he was with three others, the police stated. His graveside service at Hartselle City Cemetery is on Thursday.
Police from the nearby city of Priceville were in pursuit of the suspect, identified as Archie Hale, fleeing on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Hartselle Police Department. They entered Hartselle’s City limits from I-65, headed west on Highway 36/Main Street, and as the suspect entered the intersection of Highway 31 at a very high speed, he struck the minivan.
“The video also confirms the traffic light was red for the suspect vehicle,” the Hartselle Police Department stated.
The department said it reviewed the cameras from the pursuing officer’s vehicle, the surrounding area, and from its own police vehicles, which tried to intervene with Tire Deflation Devices.
Hartselle Police Chief Alan McDearmond, in the statement, described the incident as “the most egregious example of willful disregard for human life” he has encountered.
“We are committed to presenting a complete and evidence-based case to the District Attorney’s Office and will pursue justice relentlessly on behalf of the victims and their loved ones,” he added.
Meanwhile, Priceville Mayor Sam Heflin said the city has placed one of its officers, Garry Chapman, on administrative leave, following the incident.
Chapman, according to family and police Facebook posts, is the son of Duane Chapman, known as Dog the Bounty Hunter – the professional bounty hunter and reality TV star.

Alabama High School Team Adds to National Record

The last time Columbia High School won a football game was in October of 2015, long before any of the current players were even close to suiting up on a Friday night for the Eagles in Alabama high school football.
And while it is never fun to be part of a long losing streak, Columbia has now put its name in the national high school football history books.
Columbia has lost 94 consecutive games, with the last win coming on October 16, 2015 when they topped Ardmore, 34-16. The latest defeat came at the hands of Muscle Shoals this past week, 49-6.
They have moved well past the old national record, which was set at 82 by Glascock County out of Georgia.
One positive to all of the losing is that Gatorade agreed to do a documentary on the team this season. The team is coached by Sammie Coates, who had a run in the NFL.
Coates in a statement before the season, said “This is bigger than football. It’s about teaching discipline, belief and building something special together as a team, and I’m proud to coach these young men.”
The documentary series is titled “All the Reason Not to Quit – The Columbia HS Story.”
Coates is in his first season as head coach of the team. He is a native of Leroy, Alabama where he shined as a senior, earning multiple offers before committing to Auburn.
During his NFL career, Coates played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and a number of CFL teams. He earned all-SEC second team honors at Auburn and caught 29 passes and two touchdowns in the NFL.
Coates previously was a position coach at Jensen Beach High School, Ohio Northern University and Virginia-Wise before taking the Columbia job this past January.
Columbia takes on Hartselle this coming week.
