Oh so close.

Leading by three at halftime, the UMass Lowell men’s basketball team was on the verge of claiming the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid.

But the River Hawks couldn’t hold the 32-29 lead, as turnovers and missed foul shots plagued the visitors in the second half during a 66-61 loss to Vermont in the America East championship game Saturday in Burlington, Vt.

Cam Morris III led UML (22-10) with 17 points before a sellout crowd a national ESPN2 audience.
