Swimmer struck, seriously injured by boat on lake in Vermont, officials say – The Boston Globe

A swimmer was seriously injured when she was hit by a boat operated by her brother-in-law on Lake Champlain in Vermont on Sunday, authorities said.

Lydia Vorsteveld, 61, of Bridport, Vt. sustained “suspected life-threatening injuries” when she was struck shortly before 8 p.m. as she was swimming in Arnold Bay in the town of Panton, Vt., State Police said.

She was flown to the University of Vermont Medical Center and on Monday remained in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the boat, Gerard J. Vorsteveld, 49, of Panton, Vt., was arrested on suspicion of boating under the influence, police said.

He was taken to the Vergennes Police Department for processing and was later released with a citation to appear in Addison County Superior Court at a later date, police said.
