(KNSI) – The heartbeat of the area’s high school hockey championship squad commits to play at the Division One collegiate level.

Cathedral junior forward John Hirschfeld will lace up the skates for the University of Vermont of Hockey East in a couple of years. Hirschfeld can light the lamp, notching 27 goals in 31 games for the Crusaders, but he is primarily a facilitator.

Hirschfeld registered 56 assists for a total of 83 points. He continues to refine his game, now skating for the Austin Bruins of the NAHL.

Vermont has two Frozen Four appearances in its history but hasn’t made it to the NCAA tournament since 2014. The team was 13-19-3 overall last season.
