KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island Women’s Rowing had a competitive day of racing at the Lake Morey Regatta on Saturday morning in Fairlee, Vt.
The Rams hung in with Dartmouth, which received votes in last week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, before defeating Atlantic 10 foe Fordham nearly across the board in the afternoon. Massachusetts was also at the event, though Rhody did not face off against the team directly.
The top two eights maintained contact with the Big Green in the opening rounds of action. The crew of coxswain Lily Stasaitis, Catie Castle, Bethany Nordstrom, Hailey Pardi, Emma Barnhart, Nicole Jones, Olivia Kowalski, Cait Reardon and Bella Bruno finished just under four seconds off of Dartmouth’s winning pace in the morning before handily defeating the opposing Rams by a 10-second margin in the afternoon.
Coxswain Ellie McGee, Jessica Tosi, Samantha Gumprecht, Sarah Pecoraro, Sammie Gorecki, Eryn Wale, Amanda Cubit, Maia Hembruff and Emma Larsh were just over two seconds off of besting the Big Green in the morning. In their second round, they defeated Fordham with open water.
Both the Varsity 4+ and the Third Varsity 8+ crossed ahead of Fordham in the second round of racing. URI’s boats got faster as the day went on, a testament to both the speed found throughout the competition and a tailwind on the course.

A car carrying a family of three went into the Seekonk River in Rhode Island Sunday evening, authorities said.
The vehicle entered the river near the Taft Street boat ramp shortly before 7:30 p.m., Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said in a statement.
A bystander riding a jet ski heard the car dive into the water and attempted to help, while another witness called 911, according to Goncalves.
First responders arrived within three minutes of the emergency call, Goncalves noted.
The vehicle’s three occupants are believed to still be inside, The Boston Globe reported.
Recovery efforts resumed Monday, with Pawtucket police and fire personnel working alongside Rhode Island State Police and other state agencies to remove the vehicle from the river, Goncalves said.
“Conditions are extremely challenging for dive teams due to the strong current and poor underwater visibility,” she added.
A video released by the Globe shows the car being recovered from the water Monday afternoon.
Authorities have not released the identities or conditions of the occupants.
“We ask that you please keep the family and their loved ones in your prayers as our first responders continue recovery efforts,” Goncalves said.
