NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Wild Plant Society announced the cancellation of their upcoming native plant sale due to invasive “jumping worms”.

Pat Foley, the President of RIWPS, said the worms were found in the trays of plants being readied for sale, and eventually had to decide to dispose of the plants affected by the worms.

This resulted in a drop in the number of plants that could be sold for the event originally scheduled for Aug. 24.

“However, without further work to “bare root” the more than 1000 plants intended for the sale and replanting them in clean pots and soil,” Foley said. “We cannot feel confident we have adequately mitigated the infection.”

Foley added that the date of the sale was too close to complete the remediation work and give the plants time to recover.

The next sale event for the RIWPS will be next spring.
