RICHMOND, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police and the Medical Examiners Office investigated a crash off of Route 3 in Richmond on Saturday.

Detectives spent hours gathering evidence at a scene in the woods near the Exeter-Richmond line.

Witnesses told ABC 6 News crews on-scene that police flocked to the area early Saturday morning, some with long guns, telling residents to stay in their homes until further notice.

Route 3 was closed for a portion of the day, reopening around 3:00 p.m.

A badly mangled SUV was towed out of the woods, and detectives could be seen carrying a body bag away from the crash scene.

ABC 6 has reached out to both state and local police for information on the crash and any word on potential fatalities.

Officials did not note if there was any threat to the public.

This is a developing story — ABC 6 will provide details when they are released.
