In advance of the 4th of July, the Rhode Island Office of the State Fire Marshal is providing important tips and reminders for fire safety.
“We want all Rhode Islanders to have a safe holiday and summer,” said Rhode Island State Fire Marshal Tim McLaughlin. “Everyone should practice fire safety, but fireworks should be left to the professionals to prevent serious injuries.”
Rhode Island state law prohibits the sale, use or possession of display fireworks and aerial consumer fireworks. Certain devices, such as handheld “sparklers,” are legal for use by the general public 16 years of age or older. However, the fire marshal warns that sparklers burn between 1800 degrees and 3000 degrees fahrenheit and should be handled with caution.
The best way to stay safe from fireworks is to not use them. Instead, attend a public fireworks display put on by professionals.
The fire marshal is also urging the public to remember that improper or careless use of fireworks, fire pits and grills can lead to fires and explosions that can cause significant property damage and put public safety at risk.
