Alcoholics Anonymous in Rhode Island promotes ‘Alkathons’ for support during the holidays

(WJAR) — The holidays can be a rough time for different folks– especially for people recovering from alcoholism.

It’s why Alcoholics Anonymous is promoting the importance of their Alkathons.

These “Alkathons” are hosted throughout Rhode Island on holidays like Thanksgiving Day.

Its purpose is to create a safe space and help people stay sober or achieve sobriety.

Mike, who has asked to remain anonymous, shared why the holidays were a hard time for him.

“Coming back and reconnecting with families and after some years of active alcoholism can be difficult,” said Mike. “So having a place that is safe loving and compassionate to join together has been helpful for me and helpful for other alcoholics in here.”

There are several “Alkathons” happening today and more slated for the rest of the year.

Mike said their “Alkathons” vary in times often starting from mid-morning or noon to evening to midnight, and in the case of Amateur Night, or New Year’s Eve, is followed by another entire day of “Alkathon.”

They tend to include full holiday meals and do include marathon AA meetings.

Mike said the meetings are typically hosted by local groups who volunteer to be a part of the festivities.
