About South County: It’s high time RI embraces its role in cannabis culture

The cops might like this ranking on pot, but the stoners won’t. Gov. Dan McKee, well, he might want to re-think some tourism angles if he’s not tangled too much in the weeds about weed.

Yup. Weed and tourism. Lawnstarter’s 2024 survey on the “Best Cities to Get Stoned” puts Providence and Rhode Island at the bottom of the heap for hemp.

The ratings doesn’t even get to tourist-haven South County towns. Create a “cannabis-cation” for visitors to toke, take in scenery and tell lots of friends to visit, too.

What is wrong with this picture? We’re a tourist paradise, so make more weed available nearby, do the political elbow-rubbing for some local recreational dispensaries, open some Bud and Breakfasts, and give another reason to enjoy the area.

Dan, your tourism folks need to talk to your PR folks and the Department of Business Regulation folks to make the state — and especially South County — more hospitable to stoners.

You certainly saw promise in 2022 when you signed the legalization legislation.
