White Oak firefighters battle fires in freezing temperatures
WHITE OAK, P.A. (KDKA) — With the very frigid temperatures we’re experiencing – that can make it difficult for people who do work outside, including firefighters.
Rainbow Volunteer Fire Chief Brandon Schmidt knows just that.
“It’s nothing that we haven’t dealt with before – so the firefighters, they’re kind of used to it by this point,” said Schmidt.
The temps have been way below freezing – and they could touch below zero next week. Precautions are imperative.
“Firefighters can’t do the things that they do without a large support staff,” said Schmidt.
That means help from police and public works – even utilities.
“We always have to watch where the water goes after we spray it on the house or whatever’s on fire,” said Schmidt.
That’s because runoff may freeze over and police may have to block off the roads, or they may need some salt.
“Where issues arise – they’re very quick to respond to help us out to make sure we can do what we need to do as well,” said Schmidt.
As for the firefighters? Damp gear – is not fun.
“Once it gets wet – it’s pretty much game over at that point,” said Schmidt. “Usually the firefighters themselves will just have extra shirts and socks and underwear – different stuff too.”
So many things could happen while fighting fires this time of year. Water from hydrants could freeze up — but Schmidt says it’s all about finding a way to get it done.
“What’s gonna happen – is gonna happen, no matter what, but we need to be able to put the water still on the fires.”
Schmidt said it’s important to practice fire safety all of the time, but especially during this time of the year.

Pittsburgh Police arrest operators of Hippietown stores on drug charges
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The operators of two Hippietown stores in Pittsburgh have been arrested on drug charges.
Christopher Younger, who operates the store with his wife, Alex Veoni, sells what he calls “legal weed,” but Pittsburgh Police disagree with his perspective.
The couple operate the two Hippietown stores and were arrested on Tuesday and charged with possession with intent to deliver narcotics and the delivery of a controlled substance.
Until recently, Younger had a third store on East Ohio Street on the city’s North Side, but since it’s closing, police say he has been selling his product out of a maroon van.
KDKA’s news crew was there on Tuesday when the van was confiscated and towed away for evidence. Police say their investigation is ongoing.
In recent reports, Younger has told KDKA lead investigator Andy Sheehan that he sells legal marijuana called THCa — which is less potent than illegal marijuana.
Younger says others who sell THCa have not been targeted by law enforcement and says he’s the victim of selective prosecution.
Police testing shows THCa to be real marijuana and say that businesses and people who live on the North Side complain that Younger’s business has attracted an undesirable clientele to his stores.
Younger and Veoni have been taken to the Allegheny County Jail and are awaiting arraignment.

Pittsburgh’s first women’s sports watch bar, Title 9, to open in February
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pittsburgh is getting its first women’s sports bar next month.
Title 9 says it plans to open in East Liberty in February, airing exclusively women’s sports. The concept was developed by Sheree Goldstein, who will open the bar in the adjacent space next to her other business, Square Cafe, on Centre Avenue.
“I am passionate about women’s sports and it’s been so amazing over the past few years to see these incredible athletes finally getting the viewership they deserve,” Goldstein said in a news release. “We want to do what we can to grow here in our hometown and also support and connect with our collegiate and professional players in Pittsburgh. The goal is to make this not only a place to watch women’s sports but to convene and grow the community.”
Title 9 will serve cocktails and mocktails and highlight local brewers. The menu will have snacks and handhelds with vegan and vegetarian options.
“Some Square Cafe crossovers will be present in the food and beverage program for sure,” Goldstein said. “There are some really popular snacks, like our tots, and handhelds like our wraps and veggie burgers that are sure to make an appearance. We’re also going to be doing some fun twists on bar food, as well.”
The establishment has plans for a full bar, eight TVs, garage windows and a rooftop bar.
Title 9 says it will be hosting a series of pop-ups ahead of its official grand opening, which is projected for mid-February.
