PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Rain chances will be around this morning and this afternoon throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Yesterday I talked about how the timing of today’s rain was going to be key as model data all of a sudden was pushing the timing of the rain back to the early afternoon.  If we continued to see rain chances sliding into the later part of the day then we would potentially see a severe weather chance.  

The good news is that we have seen model data do an about-face.  The first rain of the day will be around maybe as early as 8 a.m. for places up along I-80 like Mercer and Lawrence County. Rain should have arrived in Pittsburgh by 10 a.m.

Rain will continue until around 4:00 this afternoon. 

Just a heads up, while the Storm Prediction Center has not highlighted the area just yet I think places in Northeast Pennsylvania will see severe storms later today.  Strong wind should be the biggest concern if heading to that area.

Due to rain, highs today will dip to the mid to low 70s.  I have Pittsburgh seeing a high of 73°.  Today’s high should be reached around noon with temperatures slowly falling for the rest of the day.  I have today’s low (57°) being hit just before midnight. 

Wednesday should see some morning fog around.  Morning lows will dip down to around 51°. Wednesday highs will be near 80 degrees and may be the best-feeling day of the week.  We should continue to see temperatures ticking up through Friday when we see our next good chance to see rain. I have Friday highs hitting the mid-80s.

It now looks like the best chance for weekend rain will occur late Friday into early Saturday morning.  Great news for Marathon weekend.  

SHARPSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) – A little joy was brought to Larry Pilarski and his family Monday afternoon, thanks to the Twilight Wish Foundation and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pilarski, his wife, children and grandchildren were granted the wish to see the Pirates play this Sunday and sit right behind home plate at PNC Park.

Missy Counahan, the Allegheny County Chapter Director of the Twilight Wish Foundation, says that it is a privilege to grant wishes like this to deserving seniors like Pilarski.

“We get more than we give when we do these wishes,” said Counahan. “We do this because we love geriatrics and we have made geriatrics our life’s work, and it is just so important to give back to them.”

Pilarski and his wife Mary Frances have been married for over 40 years. She says that Larry has been battling cancer for over a decade, and this last year has been a difficult one. But, she says, that wishes like this are a true blessing when times are tough.

“Well, this was a wonderful surprise,” said Mary Frances. “Our niece nominated Larry. We didn’t know about this, and we just want to thank Twilight Wish and the Pittsburgh Pirates because we are very grateful. This has been a blessing. He has been a lifelong fan of the Pirates, and so have all of us, so we are very grateful. It’s a blessing. It really is.”

The game that Larry and his family will be this Sunday at PNC Park when the Pirates take on the Colorado Rockies. If you are at the park to cheer on the Pirates and you see Larry, be sure to cheer him on as well.

MOUNT WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) – Road closures will take effect starting Monday, April 29, to allow crews to work on the Climate Resilience Mitigation Project, locally called the Mount Washington Landslide Remediation Project.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be closed off along William Street between Arlington Avenue and Cola Street beginning at 7 a.m. Monday. Starting on May 6, residents living on Cola Street will see the construction of a temporary road between Lava Street and Cola Street to provide access, according to a City of Pittsburgh press release.

Allison Park Contractors will work on installing new roadway drainage, repairing the roadway, and installing new retaining walls, among other duties. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2024.

Several locations in Mount Washington have been affected by hillside instability, causing debris to spill onto roadways and walkways. The three locations identified as areas that would best benefit from the remediation project are Greenleaf Street, Reese Street and William Street, the press release added.

The project also focuses on stabilizing parts of the northern and western slopes of Mount Washington, with retaining walls and geotechnical installations to protect homes and roadways. 

The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is continuing to work with emergency management agencies at the federal and state levels to secure the hillsides of Mount Washington and minimize the probability of landslides.
