It’s already Week 14, and I have to say, that is so depressing. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Christmas. It’s the best time of year. I spend way too much money on decor for my home, and I love it. But man, when the season is almost over, it always feels like it’s too soon.

Steelers’ Darnell Washington Leaves Game With Injury
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most fearsome players in the entire NFL. Tight end Darnell Washington is an absolute freak of nature, standing 6’7″ and recently revealing that he is over 300 pounds. The 24-year-old pass-catcher and run-blocker has become a crucial piece of the offense and the team’s breakout star.
As the Steelers battled the Baltimore Ravens in a huge AFC North matchup, they were forced to figure out their offense without their breakout tight end. During a second quarter drive, quarterback Aaron Rodgers dumped a pass off to Washington in the flat. Washington ran up field, nearly earning a first down as the team needed 15 yards.
It took two Ravens defenders to bring the hulking player down to the ground, but the tackle seemed to shake up Washington. The Ravens defenders hit Washington up high and down low simultaneously, and he fell hard to the ground. Washington’s head appeared to make contact with the turf as he went down, and he was unable to brace his fall very much. Immediately after the play, he looked dazed and was tended to by medical personnel. He was assisted into the medical blue tent, and then the team’s locker room after several minutes.
#Steelers TE Darnell Washington is being evaluated for a possible concussion. His return is questionable.

Impact of Washington’s Injury
Withoiut Washington, the Steelers’ offense takes a huge hit. Washington has become a trusted safety blanket for Rodgers. In 13 games, he’s hauled in 22 receptions for 276 yards and recorded one touchdown.
The Steelers have depth behind Washington, thankfully, but it’s a question of if they are utilized as much as Washington has been. Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith and Conner Heyward give them three other tight end options, but none provide the same skillset and physical intimidation that Washington does. The team’s run-blocking has excelled when Washington is on the field. As determined as the other three tight ends are, they can’t make up for the blocking skills the injured tight end brings every week.
What the trio can do, however, is help in the passing game. All three have steady hands and have the route-running abilities to get open. The Steelers will need one of them to step up and help provide a secondary passing option for Rodgers.
AFC North Up for Grabs
The injury comes at a terrible time for the Steelers. With the AFC North up for grabs, the Steelers and Ravens are playing for their postseason lives already in Week 14. The winner of this contest takes a decisive lead on top of the division, and now the Steelers have to find a way to make up for Washington’s absence on offense.

Arizona signee Brandon Smith, prolific offense leads Central East past Pittsburg in NorCal 1-A final
PITTSBURG, Calif. — The game was decided, the Bengals of Central East of Fresno had given up a couple easy fourth-quarter scores but Brandon Smith wasn’t quite satisfied.
The 6-foot, 190-pound senior running took the direct snap, raced up the middle and carried two Pittsburg defenders on his back the final eight yards to finish off a 19-yard run.
He could have gone down easily five to 10 yards earlier, but that’s just not his style. And perhaps, he was making a statement.
The Bengals want to finish the job.
Even though Smith got banged up late in the third quarter, he too wanted to finish and did so with a career high 38 carries for 270 yards and two touchdowns as the Bengals went wire-to-wire to hand an equally hungry Pittsburg squad a 55-36 CIF Northern California Division 1-A home championship game defeat Saturday night under brisk and breezy conditions.
Smith’s determined run came on his 35th carry.
“He’s an absolute stud an a great kid,” Central East coach Kyle Biggs said. “He’s been amazing on both sides of the ball and just does everything for us.”
“Our goal since January was to finish the job,” said Biggs, whose team did so in his fourth season (2019), when they went 15-0, beating favored Sierra Canyon 34-19 in the State 1-AA finals at Cerritos College.
This team (13-1) has one hiccup, a 42-26 loss at Grant in Week 2, but have since rattled off 12 straight wins utilizing perhaps the most complete offense in the state, one which averages 49 points and 541 yards per game.
The Bengals upped those numbers on Saturday, piling up 563 yards and going for 55 points against a prideful program and a defense that had given up just 81 points in its last eight games with two shutouts.
Besides Smith, who signed to the University of Arizona on Wednesday, churning out hard yards inside and outside, junior quarterback Jelani Dippel threw for four touchdowns, two more to Bayon Harris for 49 and 30 yards, his 24th and 25th TD catches of the season. Dippel also rushed for a touchdown to put the finishing touches on this one.
“Jelani has been great all year long and keeps getting better,” Biggs said.
He also hit Cal-signee Eli Morgan with a pretty 35-yard bomb to start the third quarter and a 22-yard to Andrew Garcia, his first TD catch of the season, to start the game.
Add in two brilliant play calls, a 52-yard reverse by speedy Xavier Jones and an 11-yard keeper from Dippel — neither runner was touched on either play — and the Central East offense was on full diplay, leading to a 48-14 lead midway through the third quarter.
The Pirates (12-3), who largely outplayed Northern California Open Division representative De La Salle-Concord in a 24-17 defeat about a month ago, showed all sorts of pride and athleticism all night, including the brilliant one-hand 7-yard touchdown catch by RJ Mosley, a long and fleet 6-foot-4 receiver who will join Smith at the Unviersity of Arizona.
Mosley (seven catches, 95 yards) added a 42-yard catch and run in the fourth quarter, when fleet sophomore receiver Kenneth Moore, a big play machine, added a 67-yard touchdown from senior quarterback Carlos Torres (13 of 23, 247 yards).
Moore also had a 79-yard catch-and-run — he was caught at the one by Smith — that set up a short TD run, and an 18-yard touchdown catch.
But the Pirates, who bring back many of its top players next year including sophomore quarterback Javale Jones (three completions, 117 yards, and two runs for 45 yards), couldn’t overcome five turnovers, including a fumbled kickoff after Morgan’s touchdown catch to start the second half.
When the Bengals turned that immediately into seven more points on Smith’s second TD run of the night, this one was essentially over at 48-14.
That said, after long touchdown passes to Mosley and Ward cut the deficit to 48-28 early in the fourth and the Pirates forced a three-and-out, a miracle was still in reach.
But linebacker Juan Ochoa made a leaping interception of a Torres pass which sorta sealed it. Dippel did so officially with his 11-yard keeper with 4:41 to go, making it 55-28.

Steelers mailbag: Will Pittsburgh trade for Kyler Murray?
Maybe I also dread this time of year a lot as of late because the Steelers are always in the midst of a collapse, as they are right now. They are 6-6, have lost five of their last seven, and are heading to Baltimore to face the Ravens. Ahead of that, though, let’s dive into this week’s mailbag.
Q: Can we start over? – ChippedHam
A: If by this you mean rebuild, I’d welcome it with open arms. Trade Cam Heyward for a Day Three pick. Trade T.J. Watt for a Day Two pick (no, you aren’t getting anything better than that. Certainly not a first-round pick). Trade Highsmith in a package to move up in the draft for a quarterback. Trade Mike Tomlin to the Giants or Titans. Hire Klint Kubiak. Draft one of the top quarterbacks and definitely start a new era in Pittsburgh.
Q: If you had the #1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft would you select a QB? If so who would it be? If not a QB, who would you select? Who You Got:
- #11 BYU vs #4 Texas Tech
- #3 Georgia vs #9 Alabama
- #2 Indiana vs #1 Ohio State
- Duke vs #17 Virginia – Pittsblitz56
A: Fernando Mendoza is the easy choice. He’s the best quarterback in the Nation. If it can’t be a quarterback, Rueben Bain to put opposite of Herbig after all of the trades I would make. I’ll actually do a piece to show my “Trade Everyone Draft.”
Conference Championship Picks: Texas Tech, Georgia, Indiana, Virginia
Q: Please, please, please, tell me the Steelers won’t go after Kyler Murray. I’ve lived in AZ (huge Pitt fan), my whole life. K1 is too short, too fragile, and not a good QB, 6.5 years have shown this. Please make me be able to sleep at night…lol – Muchodiablo
A: I’d like to say no, but it wouldn’t shock me if they went after him. I’m not a Kyler guy, either. At this point, this is just who he is. For every great game he has, he’ll have three mediocre performances where it looks as if he’s never seen a football. Hard pass from me. Draft a guy and start over.
Q: With a backup LT, can Aaron handle any more hits like he did the past few weeks? Are the Steelers ready to shut him down after the next big hit and just see what they have Rudy? And are you confident the 2026 draft is the year to draft the next Terry/Benjamin or Pickett? – Polamolicules_Dude
A: Andrus Peat actually played solid against the Bills, and the Ravens’ pass rush isn’t great. There’s nothing to see with Rudolph. We know what he is – he’s a backup quarterback. If they wanted to see what they had, they should start Will Howard (they won’t). I’m far from a college football quarterback expert, but Fernando Mendoza looks like he’ll be very good on Sundays. Dante Moore looks good. Ty Simpson could fit what Arthur Smith wants to do and could be something. It’s a fine trio of guys, just completely different from who many expected to be the cream of the crop.
Q: All of your concerns are valid. But just to play devil’s advocate…. the realist in me thinks that next year is where we fully embrace the rebuild. If we were flirting with a top 5 selection this year, maybe there’s a shot at getting your next franchise QB, but the class ain’t looking great. The point is, we won’t be drafting high enough to get our franchise QB this year, so let’s load up on talent to surround that guy with when he gets here in a year or two.
If they take that approach, I’m probably ok with a bridge year of Murray. Probably wouldn’t move the needle overall, but he’s elusive enough that he’d make our offense a degree or two more exciting to watch. Defenses would just have to play a little more honest to respect his escapability… and if we’re gonna suck next year anyway, why not make the offense a modicum more exciting to watch? At least the drives may see the chains move a few times before ending in a turnover as opposed to 750 3&outs per game.
I’m not saying I WANT it… I’m just saying that’s probably a mild upgrade over recent approaches… signing another QB in their late 30s who doesn’t have their legs anymore. – ThePen_IsMightier
A: I just really don’t want to sit through another mediocre season, man. Of course, when training camp rolls around, I’ll be excited and let myself believe it could be different, but deep down, I’ll know it won’t be. The class is fine, in terms of QBs, and the Steelers can trade up. That’s how the Bills got Josh Allen, and it’s how the Chiefs got Patrick Mahomes. Gotta rip the band-aid off and start over. I’d be incredibly excited for a rebuild.
Q: Fender or Gibson? The Rolling Stones or the Beetles? Or is it Beiber or Rodrigo, cough… (sorry, I just vomited in my mouth) Dodge, Ford, or the brand for losers? Scotch or Bourbon? – Les Norton
A: I don’t know who Fender or Gibson are. I think both the Rolling Stones and Beetles stink (I’m 26, to be fair. Both far precede me). If I had to pick a truck, I’d probably pick a Tacoma, but I did get a Bronco for a rental once for the Combine, and I didn’t want to take it back. Plus, I owned a Malibu for a while, and it was a pain, so probably Ford. I’m very basic when it comes to drinks. I like Jameson, so I guess I’m splitting the difference with an Irish Whiskey.

South Pittsburg Pirates top McKenzie Rebels 42-14 to win second 1A BlueCross Bowl in three years
For the second time in three years, South Pittsburg is headed home with a gold ball. The Pirates beat McKenzie 42-14 in Friday’s 1A title game.
Star senior Ja’Mychal Buckner was named BlueCross Bowl MVP, tallying 204 yards and three touchdowns. 181 of those yards came in the first half.
The Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their second drive of the game and Buckner’s second score of the day made it a 14-0 game after the first quarter.
The offense stayed hot in the next three quarters, which included touchdowns from Mr. Football finalist Dayon Cooper, Martavious Smith and a punt return touchdown from Brandon Goldsmith.
The Rebels did not get on the board until the third quarter, but it was far too late.
South Pittsburg finishes the year with a 14-1 record. Congratulations to the Pirates!
