Russell Wilson to play in Pittsburgh Steelers’ next preseason game

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson will play against the Buffalo Bills next Saturday in the team’s second preseason game; Mike Tomlin revealed following Pittsburgh’s loss to the Houston Texans.

Wilson sat out of Friday’s game in an abundance of caution to not reinjure his calf strain. Pittsburgh currently has Wilson listed as the starter on their depth chart, and Justin Fields, who started against the Texans, is their backup.

Tomlin described the competition on Wednesday as still open, but hinted there is a very good reason that Wilson is still listed as the starter, or as he has used throughout the preseason, in ‘pole position’.

“You guys saw the depth chart I released yesterday. That is real,” Tomlin said about Wilson’s placement as the starter.

Tomlin did not state how much Wilson will play or how much time he will allocate to Fields with the starters. Yet, Tomlin was not shy in declaring that Wilson would play, which means the team was confident about their quarterback’s calf injury.

Over the last few days at training camp, Wilson began to take 11-on-11 team reps and work up to full participation in practice as he swapped first-team reps back and forth with Fields.
