Report: Russell Wilson had 'great' meeting with Pittsburgh Steelers, OC Arthur Smith

As Russell Wilson weighs his options in NFL free agency, it sounds like things are going well as he meets with the Pittsburgh Steelers. CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported things went “great” as the two sides spoke Friday.

Anderson said Wilson and new Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith met “for hours,” and the former Denver Broncos quarterback reached out to other Pittsburgh players before arriving.

The Broncos granted Wilson his release earlier this week, making history in the process. The franchise set a new NFL record by taking on an $85 million dead cap hit as a result of the move. By giving Wilson permission to speak with other teams, he can get a head start on free agency before Monday’s tampering period.

Pittsburgh isn’t the only team pursuing Wilson’s services, though. Before he arrived for his meeting with the Steelers, he held an “exploratory meeting” with the New York Giants and was seen at LaGuardia Airport. Of course, the Giants still have Daniel Jones on the roster after his big contract extension last year, but there’s speculation they could go in another direction at quarterback.

Still, speaking with New York adds to the intrigue around Wilson’s free agency after a rollercoaster two seasons with the Broncos.

Wilson arrived in Denver via trade from the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2022 season, but struggled mightily in Year 1. In 2023, though, he put up better numbers as he completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns. However, he ended up getting benched at the end of the year, leading to speculation about what could lie ahead for both Wilson and the Broncos.

Ultimately, it meant the two sides would part ways.

“Over these last two years, you have welcomed my family and me with open arms and have embraced us as members of the Denver community,” Russell Wilson wrote in a lengthy statement after his release. “This city will always hold a special place in my heart. Our family grew here, we made countless memories and friendships, and formed relationships that will last a lifetime.

“To my teammates, thank you for going to battle together and for being there through it all.
There are so many moments I cherish because of you and I am blessed for the impact you have made on my life. I am beyond grateful for all of you and to have been able to run out as your teammate was an honor.”
