Pittsburgh scores twice in 10th to top St. Louis | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

PITTSBURGH — Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz hit run-scoring singles on consecutive pitches in the 10th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Willson Contreras’ two-run home run in the eighth off Pittsburgh’s Colin Holderman tied the score 3-3.

Alec Burleson put St. Louis ahead with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly off Aroldis Chapman (1-3) after Masyn Winn’s infield single advanced automatic runner Dylan Carlson to third.

With pinch-runner Jared Triolo on second starting the bottom half, Michael A. Taylor struck out while trying to bunt and Andrew McCutchen drew a walk from Andrew Kittridge (1-4).

JoJo Romero relieved and Reynolds lined a fastball into center to drive in Triolo and advance McCutchen to second. Cruz drove a slider to right and McCutchen scored standing up as the ball bounced to the right-field wall.

“We made a bad pitch to a really good hitter in the eighth and he hit a home run,” Pirates Manager Derek Shelton said. “We just kept going. Our guys just kept playing.”

It was Cruz’s second game-ending hit this season and the third of his career.

“It felt good, for sure, but it was a team effort,” Cruz said. “Everybody played their part in it and that’s why we came back at the end and could win that game.”

BRAVES 3, GIANTS 1 Chris Sale (11-3) allowed only three hits in six innings and struck out nine to earn his 11th win, leading Atlanta to a victory over San Francisco. It is Sale’s most wins since finishing 12-4 in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox.

BREWERS 3, ROCKIES 0 William Contreras and Brice Turang had three hits apiece, Christian Yelich hit his ninth home run of the season and Colin Rea pitched seven shutout innings to lift Milwaukee past Colorado.

NATIONALS 7, METS 5 James Wood singled home the go-ahead run in his third major league game, Luis Garcia Jr. hit two home runs and Washington rallied to beat the New York Mets.

PHILLIES 5, CUBS 3 Edmundo Sosa broke a tie with a short sacrifice fly in the eighth, Whit Merrifield followed with an RBI single and Philadelphia topped the struggling Chicago Cubs.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ASTROS 9, BLUE JAYS 2 Jose Altuve hit a tiebreaking single in a four-run seventh inning, Yordan Alvarez homered for the third consecutive game and Houston beat Toronto for their 11th win in 13 games.

ATHLETICS 5, ANGELS 0 Joey Estes (3-3) tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and a walk as Oakland defeated the Los Angeles Angels.

ROYALS 4, RAYS 2 Michael Wacha (5-6) allowed one run on two hits over six innings, Salvador Perez drove in a pair of runs and Kansas City got a spectacular defensive play from Kyle Isbel in the ninth to beat Tampa Bay.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 2 Carson Kelly hit a grand slam and Wenceel Perez followed with a home run to back Keider Montero’s first major league win as Detroit beat Minnesota.

WHITE SOX 8, GUARDIANS 2 Erick Fedde gave up one run in six innings, Martin Maldonado homered and drove in three runs, and the Chicago White Sox routed Cleveland.

INTERLEAGUE

PADRES 6, RANGERS 4 David Peralta hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run in the seventh inning for his first of the season in San Diego’s victory over Texas.

REDS 3, YANKEES 2 Andrew Abbott took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning and reliever Fernando Cruz got Aaron Judge to ground into a pivotal double play, pitching Cincinnati past the struggling New York Yankees.

RED SOX 7, MARLINS 2 Ceddanne Rafaela tripled, doubled and drove in three runs, Brayan Bello limited Miami to a run over 6 2/3 innings and Boston beat Marlins. Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida each had two hits and two RBI to help the Red Sox win their third in a row after a three-game slide.

Fayette County man facing 1,000+ charges related to animal cruelty, neglect

A man from Fayette County has been arrested and is facing over 1,000 charges related to alleged animal cruelty and neglect.

Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele said that John Saxberg, 57, is facing charges in connection with what he called “a suspected illegal kennel operation” in Washington Township.

According to DA Aubele, Saxberg is accused of subjecting numerous animals to “deplorable conditions” and “circumstances constituting torture,” adding that approximately ten animals suffered serious bodily injuries.

Court records show that Saxberg is facing 1,029 criminal charges in total with offenses including aggravated cruelty to animals, cruelty to animals, neglect of animals, penalties related to dog licensing, and violations of vaccine requirements.

52 of the charges that Saxberg is facing are felonies, according to court records.

Online court paperwork shows that Saxberg was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon and is being held in the Fayette County Prison after bail was posted at $85,000.

A preliminary hearing for Saxberg is scheduled for late next week.

An Allegheny County park with 200-year-old trees has been added to a growing network of protected and publicly accessible old-growth forests.

Local leaders announced on Tuesday that Hartwood Acres is now part of the Old-Growth Forest Network, which consists of over 340 forests, though this is Allegheny County’s first.

The 692-acre property features a Tudor mansion built in 1929, and while about a quarter of the park is maintained, the other 75% is forested. Some of the oldest trees include a black oak that’s over 200 years old, and a sugar maple and red oak that are nearing 200 years old.

“Hartwood Acres is one of Allegheny County’s greatest natural treasures, and this designation recognizes both the ecological value of these forests and the generations of stewardship that have protected them,” Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato said in a press release. “As we work to build an Allegheny County where everyone can thrive, that includes ensuring residents have access to clean air, green spaces, and the opportunity to connect with nature close to home.”

The Old-Growth Forest Network, founded in 2012, aims to create a national network of protected, mature and native forests that are accessible to the public. The goal is to preserve at least one forest in every U.S. county that can sustain a forest.

“The importance of the preservation of these rare forests cannot be overemphasized,” said Brian Kane, the Mid-Atlantic regional manager with the Old-Growth Forest Network. “As seen at Hartwood Acres, forests perform critical environmental services that benefit communities, such as storing carbon, providing wildlife habitat, and retaining stormwater. OGFN is grateful that Allegheny County values its old-growth forests and will enable its residents and visitors to marvel at these old hardwoods far into the future as they grow even more mature and majestic.”

Overturned truck spills hazardous materials on the 62nd Street Bridge

An overturned truck spilled hazardous materials onto the 62nd Street Bridge late Monday night and crews spent several hours working to contain the spill.

The Cherry City Volunteer Fire Company said it was assistant on a “large scale hazmat incident” along with crews from Allegheny County Emergency Services and the city of Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Fire.

A truck turned onto its side on the Sharpsburg side of the Senator Robert D. Fleming Bridge, also known as the 62nd Street Bridge, late Monday night and the fire company said crews were working to contain the leak.

An overturned truck spilled hazardous materials on the 62nd Street Bridge that connects several Pittsburgh neighborhoods with Sharpsburg and Etna near Route 28.

A first responder told KDKA’s news crew at the scene that the chemical that was spilled was peroxide and the fire company said crews were working to keep the material from entering drainage systems.

Around 4 a.m. Tuesday, the fire company provided an update and said that all “hazardous materials have been mitigated,” but that the bridge is expected to remain closed for an extended period of time.

Drivers are being urged to use alternate routes for the morning commute.
