Hey Ray: Types of winter storms, explained
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – I know you have heard of Winter Storms and Blizzards, but there are many different types of systems that bring some of the heaviest snows in the winter.
One of the most common systems in our area is an Alberta Clipper. These get their name because they originate near Alberta, Canada and they move pretty fast, clipping you with a dose of snow.
They dive down from Alberta, cross over the Great Lakes, and then usually exit in the Northeast States. These are usually good for about 2-4″ of snowfall in our area, depending on how much moisture the Great Lakes help with.
In the Summer, you may have seen a squall line of thunderstorms. There is actually a winter version of those, and they’re also called “Squall Lines”.
Much like their spring and summer counterparts, winter squall lines are a thin line of snowfall. They move at the front of cold air masses, and they are convective. This gives them a lot of lift, meaning graupel, thundersnow, and brief, heavy snow are all possible in these squall lines.
How about a system with a fun name? Let’s talk about a Panhandle Hook! These storms generate near the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, thus the first part of their name. They start out moving in an eastward direction, but the National Weather Service says they get their name because they hook or curve northward into the Midwest States and Great Lakes Region.
These are systems have the potential for heavy snow, especially north of the Low Pressure that is associated with it. South of that “low”, thunderstorms are usually found.
The winter storm systems that probably get the most attention are Nor’easters. These are typically associated with the big snows that occur on the East Coast. They generate near coastal waters and move up the east coast. While moving up the coast, they strengthen from the relatively warmer Atlantic Ocean waters, sometimes with winds reaching hurricane strength.
They get their name from the winds that flow counterclockwise around the low-pressure center of it. With that flow, strong winds blow from the Northeast. Those winds have a lot of moisture that meets up with cold air bringing the potential for very heavy snow!
At the end of the day, if you get enough snow, you will have to shovel, no matter what the storm is called!

I Need a Pridefest Buddy – Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents
Amidst over 70 Pride festivals in Pennsylvania, I stand alone as none of my friends want to go. Not the big Pittsburgh Pride, not the small community park festivals.
This feels upside down. I’m a lesbian blogger and have no Pride friends?
I respect personal decisions, but this is a year to show up. Show up even just for an hour. Buy something, throw some coin in a basket. Our community might crumble. Showing up for Pride is not the same ask as door knocking or phone banking. Connect with people without saying a word. Remind yourself who we are. Send a message. Insert more little sayings. You get my point.
I decided to skip tabling this year. My energy is low. If I go to Pride, I want to just be one of the folx.
I wouldn’t actually mind going solo, but I have no vehicle. Gertie is still not running. Should I Uber? How long might I have to wait for a drive home?
Tomorrow, May 31 is Ross Township. I might Uber there.
Saturday, June 6 is New Castle Pride in Lawrence County.
Sunday June 7 is Pittsburgh and Connellsville. I can walk to Pittsburgh.
Saturday June 13 is tough – Indiana, Oil City, Mt. Lebo, Scottdale
Sunday, June 14 is Vandergrift and Freeport
Saturday June 20 is Millvale
Sunday June 28 is Forest Hills, Dormont, and Hazelwood
Monday June 29 is Aspinwall/Fox Chapel
Showing up in Lawrence, Fayette, Indiana, Venango, Westmoreland, Armstrong counties feels important.
What do you think?

Steelers WR finally escapes doghouse after one game-changing phone call
Nothing seemed to go in Roman Wilson’s favor while Mike Tomlin led the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whether it was battling through an injury-filled rookie season or struggling to find his footing in his second year, Wilson now finds himself on the roster bubble. He understands this could be his final opportunity to establish himself in Pittsburgh, and a coaching change may have given him a boost.
With Mike McCarthy now serving as head coach of the Steelers, Wilson has a fresh opportunity to reset his trajectory.
Any issues that may have lingered under Tomlin are now in the past. While it is unclear if the young playmaker will immediately build chemistry with Aaron Rodgers, a new coaching staff brings the potential for change. According to McCarthy, Wilson was also one of the first players to reach out after the hiring, which could signal a strong level of motivation moving forward.
“He was one of the first men to reach out. Just clearly ask what the expectation was of him, how I view him.” McCarthy said. “How I saw him fitting in as it rolls. He’s had a great offseason.”
Nothing will be handed to Roman Wilson, as Pittsburgh has completely overhauled its wide receiver group this offseason. DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., and Germie Bernard all appear set for significant roles on offense, which could leave Wilson in a difficult position. However, if he proves during training camp that he deserves playing time, McCarthy will not overlook his performance.
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Roman Wilson might be turning a corner with HC Mike McCarthy
It will be up to Roman Wilson to prove he can be a starting caliber receiver throughout the preseason. If he fails to secure the fourth spot on the depth chart or better, his career could enter a critical stage. Time is quickly running out, but his level of talent is still clear. The hope is that with McCarthy as an offensive-minded head coach, Wilson will be in a better position to succeed.
Reaching a high level this season will not come easily for Wilson.
At times last year, it appeared that Aaron Rodgers did not look his way often in the passing game. There could be some tension between the two, which may have contributed to the Steelers bringing in multiple veteran receivers late last season. If that disconnect still exists, it could become another obstacle for Wilson as he tries to earn Rodgers’ trust and secure a larger role in the offense.
With McCarthy leading the coaching staff, he will look to unlock the full potential of Pittsburgh’s offense. Wilson could play an important role in helping address the unit’s ongoing struggles. Despite the talent ahead of him on the depth chart, his opportunity could grow significantly this season. He will need to earn his place, but there is a clear path for him to succeed.
Outside of Metcalf, Pittman Jr., and Bernard, Wilson should still have an opportunity to make plays this season.
If he is unable to carve out a role during the preseason, he could find himself on his way off the roster sooner than expected. However, the positive remarks from McCarthy should give him a boost of confidence entering what is shaping up to be a make-or-break campaign. This is his final opportunity to prove himself in Pittsburgh.
