Carolina Panthers cut ties with former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker

The Carolina Panthers have released former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Jacoby Windmon. Carolina poached Windmon off the Steelers’ practice squad a month ago. He re-joined the Panthers’ practice squad after his release.

Windmon, an undrafted rookie out of Michigan State, did not make the Steelers’ 53-man roster after playing well in the preseason. Instead, he joined the team’s practice squad as an edge rusher and linebacker that can play at both spots.

Windmon played in three games for the Panthers, mostly on special teams, and registered two tackles in those three games. He now heads to a practice squad where he hopes he can hone his skills.

The biggest question for Windmon might be which spot he will end up slotting in best at, as the Steelers had him playing mostly off-ball linebacker, but when injuries stacked up, he showed some flashes at outside linebacker as a pass rusher. Once he finds the spot that he can flourish at, that will allow him to stick to a 53-man roster for much longer.
