Beaver Stadium renovation plans to be voted on later this month
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (KDKA) — Penn State is moving forward with plans to renovate Beaver Stadium and the school’s Board of Trustees is set to vote on the plans later this month.
A vote on the renovations will take place on May 21 to decide on whether or not approve the plan.
The proposed plans come with a $700 million price tag and include improvements to the west end of the stadium’s club seating and executive suites.
If approved, construction is expected to start in January and will wrap up in time for the 2027 football season.
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Steelers’ offseason program got back underway on Tuesday and one of the big items getting a lot of debate is who will be the team’s #2 receiver opposite George Pickens.
There are plenty of names, but right now, third year man Calvin Austin III says he’s ready to make the jump as a more reliable receiver.
Last year, it was a disappointing season for Austin as he only had 17 catches for 180 yards, primarily because he was behind both Pickens and Diontae Johnson on the depth chart.
With Johnson traded to Carolina earlier this offseason, Austin says he’s taking nothing for granted and treating his mindset here as a walk on.
“My mindset hasn’t changed,” Austin said. “I’ve always been a hard worker and a guy that’s going to, you know, do the best I can anytime I step on the field. But you know, I’m just really, truly, trying to become a complete receiver. I think it’ll show on the field. I would be like that if they told me I would’ve had a guaranteed starting spot. If they brought in everybody, if they brought in nobody, I’m a walk on. I literally always have that mindset no matter what. Nothing can change it and it’s just you know, business as usual.”
The Steelers will be back on the field today continuing their second week of OTA’s.
An offseason of changes for the Steelers
The Steelers revamped their quarterback room earlier this year, signing Russell Wilson to the $1.21 million veteran’s minimum after the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback was released by Denver. Kenny Pickett was traded to Philadelphia and Justin Fields was acquired in a trade with Chicago and the team let Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky both leave during free agency. Kyle Allen was also signed as a free agent.
Changes at the quarterback position weren’t the only ones the team made, however, as wide receiver Diontae Johnson was dealt to the Carolina Panthers in early March.

Pittsburgh-area non-profit organization collects supplies to distribute to those in need
GREEN TREE, Pa. (KDKA) — A non-profit organization in Green Tree is helping the environment.
When stepping into Global Links, you’re met with thousands of donated chairs, beds, tables and other supplies that fill shelf after shelf.
“Walkers and wheelchairs, sutures, anything you can think of that you might use in a hospital, we have it here,” Stacy Bodow, outreach and engagement manager at Global Links.
All of the medical supplies are new.
“We have about 400 different soft supply items, medical supplies that you would see in any hospital that are regularly coming through,” Bodow said.
One morning, KDKA-TV saw workers loading up furniture that will travel by land and then sea to Honduras, where a hospital recently burned down and lost everything.
“Everybody got out safely, but the whole hospital is gone. They need to replace the entire thing,” Bodow said.
Much of the items the non-profit organization sends were donated from local universities and hospitals like UPMC. It also partners with 1,200 local groups.
“What can we do to help the communities and the environment overall?” said Michael Carlson, director of environmental services at UPMC Mercy.
The partnership between Global Links and UPMC has even helped keep unwanted items out of the landfill.
“Waiting room furniture that we didn’t need in the hospital anymore,” Carlson said. “Things like that, that we were just storing. Instead of throwing it out in the dumpster, we’re donating it.”
But it’s the volunteers who are keeping things moving at Global Links. Many are from local universities, church groups or are retired.
“This is fun,” one volunteer said. “It’s one of the best parts of the week.”
PITTSBURGH — A familiar face will be returning to the field to face the Pittsburgh Steelers this season after a year off from the NFL.
Tony Jefferson, a long-time veteran of the Baltimore Ravens, is coming out of retirement and hopes to return to action for an NFL team this coming season, according to a report from Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, who said Jefferson has been training and staying in shape while he served in a scouting role for the Ravens during the 2023 season.

Jefferson will turn 33 this year and has a wealth of experience under his belt. He’s appeared in 113 games and started 67, amassing 492 total tackles, 34 for a loss, 9.5 sacks, 4 interceptions and 8 forced fumbles over his career with the Arizona Cardinals, Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. Jefferson also has six games’ worth of playoff experience with three different teams.
Jefferson will begin talking to teams soon and should be able to use his experience to catch on with an NFL roster soon, but the Steelers don’t need to be worried – Jefferson is 2-5 against Pittsburgh in his career.
