Closing arguments set to begin in trial of Philadelphia councilman, wife

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Closing arguments are scheduled to start Tuesday within the bribery trial of Philadelphia Metropolis Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and his spouse Daybreak Chavous.

The protection rested its case within the trial on Monday.

Prices have been introduced towards the couple again in 2020, alleging a wide-ranging racketeering conspiracy and associated crimes, together with bribery, trustworthy companies fraud, a number of counts of wire fraud and tax offenses.

Federal prosecutors stated the couple was provided $66,000 in bribes disguised as consulting work for Chavous.

Additionally named in a 22-count indictment have been Common Group Houses chief govt officer and board president Abdur Rahim Islam and secretary of Common’s board Shahied Dawan.

Prosecutors stated the bribes allowed the nonprofit executives to retain management of properties inside Johnson’s South Philadelphia council district.

Authorities stated the crime was a “pay to play” scheme and that the consulting settlement was a “sham.”

Each Johnson and Chavous keep their innocence. They every resist 40 years in jail if convicted.
