A Montgomery County official said around 10:30 p.m. that a suspect was taken into custody.

Before that, a shelter-in-place order was in effect for residents on Winding Road in Pottstown for hours. The order has since been lifted.

The shooting happened after police responded to a crash involving two cars at Beech and North Mt. Vernon streets in Pottstown at around 5 p.m., according to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele.

Steele said the officers at the scene “struggled with one of the vehicle’s occupants as he reached for a firearm.” The man then fled on foot and went into a residence on Winding Road. The suspect then shot at the officers and struck one of them in the shoulder, according to Steele.

Steele said the officers returned fire, but didn’t hit the man. The officer was taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Steele said.

There’s still a heavy police presence at the scene.
